I think N.W.A adoption the Raiders' gear is an example of an authentic fashion statement not motivated by pecuniary interests. Before the Raiders moved back to Oakland in '94 NFL annual merchandising revenue went from $300M to $3B, largely in part to N.W.A. w/o them getting any direct money from the league.

regardless of their original intention, they still made good money off of the song from adidas. It became a corporate advertising stunt, so i dont know if they are deserving of praise for not "selling out." They invited Adidas corporate executives to their concert at the Garden in '86 before they had a deal w/ Adidas in order to get a deal.
