Beaverton, Portland OR, United States (1999 – present)

The Helio Sequence is an indie electronic/shoegaze band signed to indie label Sub Pop. The band was formed in 1999 in Beaverton, Oregon and consists of Brandon Summers on guitar and vocals and Benjamin Weikel, who has also played for Modest Mouse, on keyboards and drums. To date, they have released two albums on Sub Pop, two on Portland-based label Cavity Search and a self-released EP.

Their fourth album ‘Keep Your Eyes Ahead’ was released on January 29, 2008. The Helio Sequence toured with the British band Keane through the U.S.A. in 2009, and in June 2010, they were Keane’s support act in several gigs through Great Britain during the British band’s Night Train Tour.

On June 11, 2012, Sub Pop officially announced that The Helio Sequence’s fifth full-length album, entitled Negotiations, will be released on September 11, 2012. According to the band’s Facebook page, the new record will have a sound that is “warmer, more organic and more spacey/ethereal.” The Helio Sequence (Official) Facebook page also states that tour dates will be announced in July 2012.

I wish they'd tour in Europe. Saw them live two times and that was five years ago. They seem so underrated, but the music is so special and so damn good.

I am so happy to have finally seen them live, probably the best show I have ever seen. Maybe it's only because I'm such a huge fan, but definitely don't miss out on their live performance if you get a chance to go! All of their albums are excellent in their own way and the duo really embody good musicianship. You can just tell that they are good people, and they put that energy into their music. I hope they never stop playing and I look forward to seeing them live again!

Saw these guys opening for Keane in 2010. It was one of the best gigs I went to. They're so incredibly humble guys, I remember smiling at the singer and he just nodded, probably wanting to convey 'hey, thanks for actually listening to us'. I went and bought 'Keep Your Eyes Ahead' and fell in love with the title song immediately. Lately, Can't Say No, You Can Come to Me, Back to This, Hallelujah...musical heaven! One of the best indie bands I discovered in the last few years. And they're from the lovely Portland in Oregon.

I just can't get enough of Negotiations. On the first listen or two I wasn't sure I liked the sound, as it's a bit different than Keep Your Eyes Ahead. But it kept growing on me and now it's my favorite album. Simply amazing. Downward Spiral is a good example. Originally I dismissed it as being too simple and straightforward, it just didn't stand out as anything interesting. But then something just clicked. I think it's the energy in the song... it makes me want to shout at the top of my lungs. I can only imagine the feeling they get playing that song live. Oh, and did I mention they're incredible live? Seriously, go see them, you won't regret it. I'm looking forward to seeing them again on their new tour...
