Rock music is a form of popular music with a prominent vocal melody, accompanied by guitar, drums, and bass. Many styles of rock music also use keyboard instruments such as organ, piano, mellotron, and synthesizers. Other instruments sometimes utilized in rock include saxophone, harmonica, violin, flute, French horn, banjo, melodica, and timpani. To me Chuck Berry (and his contemporaries - the Chicago blues sound) are where the roots of ROCK began, although this had a slight bias towards the Blues - therefore not rock in it's purest form.The earlier Blues & Country influences of Rock & Roll (now generally classified as Rockabilly or part of the roots categorisation) sound were stripped out, influenced by the heavy industrialisation in the area which gave it's stark sound.The pure rock sound requires basic chord progressions & a focus on producing music of a high resonance (concentrate sounds around particular frequencies, rather than broader sound ranges).As ROCK has a very basic sound it is quite easy to add other fusions of sounds to produce other categorisations / genres which has led to a confussion of what rock truely is.The further you get away from the basic sound, the less rock it becomes, although the majority of genres/artists out there today have used rock at sometime or other rock should not equate to pop generally.
