On 22nd of this month, I spontaneously bought cigarettes, and started smoking. I can relate to the death-drive. Sad, really

Smoking is an odd addiction. I began just out of highschool and continued on for almost a decade before quitting. I remember my mom saying, "You know, the surgeon general states quite clearly it's very bad for your health, Michael." I told her that was a great portion of the appeal and why I began. I said that if the surgeon general suddenly determined that smoking was actually beneficial to one's health, that the past's findings were all in great error, then I'd certainly quit and find some other death conducive pastime... like huffing turpentine or active volcano exploration. The last year that I smoked it just felt so enormously embarrassing to be seen doing it; it became beyond mortifying, so there were no problems with quitting for me. I still harbor a ferocious death-drive, but it's asleep for the time being. I like to imagine when it awakens that death will have evolved purely to a matter of immediate choice. How I may die simply from the majesty in remembering her embrace, etc.

I read that he quit around 2001, but I'm sure he sneaked a few between then & the point of death. David did an interview with Jarvis Cocker that's interesting. Do a search for: "David Bowie interview -- I'm easygoing about death - it'll happen when it happens."
