Lyrics

Our step mom we did everything to hate her
She took us down to the edge of Decatur
We saw the lion and the kangaroo take her
Down to the river where they caught a wild alligator

  • Favourite track on the album, it was really a grower for me
  • I believe this is my favorite on the album. Great song.
  • I don't think there are any wild alligators in Decatur. Sufjan Stevens has really failed to capture the true awfulness of Decatur in this track.
  • This is my favorite song ever. I'm not sure why, but this song puts me in a good mood and the melody and harmony are just so fucking great. Everyone loves the 'Stephen a Douglas/Abraham Lincoln' line but for me, the way he sings 'we go riding on the abolition grain train' gives me chills every time. Favorite song ever on one of my favorite albums ever. Sufjan is the Paul Simon of our time.
  • This whole album is timelessly distinctive.
  • So goood.
  • this one rules. i never get tired of it
  • I agree, sweet vocal harmonies. I love to sing and play along with the little lead guitar part in the vocal breaks. So simple but perfect. Great song :)
  • oh frick.. make me a sundae and call me thomas.... this is good
  • Holy shit i just noticed that there's another person singing with Sufjan, i feel like an idiot.
