Sufjan Stevens (pronounced “SOOF-yahn”; born July 1, 1975) is an American musician, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Petoskey, Michigan. He is known for his lyrically focused and instrumentally rich songs that often relate to faith and family. He has enjoyed wide critical success in the United States. He is considered part of the folk revival through indie pop, but his influences are very broad, including experimental electronic music, the jazz of Vince Guaraldi, and the academic minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
Though Stevens had announced plans to make an album for each of the 50 U.S. states, beginning the series with the albums Michigan (2003) and Come On Feel The Illinoise! (2005, officially named Illinois), he has since then retracted the statement. “Sufjan Stevens is not going to write a record for each of the 50 states after all” was the original text included on the online liner notes for their Mews Too: An Asthmatic Kitty Compilation disc released on February 7, 2006. This statement was possibly included as a joke, as the text has since been removed and the current liner notes related to Sufjan Stevens reads, “Sufjan Stevens can fold a fitted-sheet (he once worked as a professional folder in a commercial Laundromat).”

I feel that he is taking his music in an entirely different direction. But Sufjan is an artist who thrives on ingenuity and innovation. Especially listening to "I Walked", i feel that the new LP will be overall a much darker tone, and stylistically more ambient. I don't doubt that it will be in the least bit disappointing either.

"Djohariah" is the garden of eden with a pair of five minute squealing guitar blasts standing at the gate. Seriously, the song makes a lot more sense if you take it as an art piece, and stop approaching it hopeing it will magically turn into a bite sized pop song. Sufjan isn't trying to be a guitar god and impress you with his awesome guitar skills. He isn't even trying to entertain you. He is building up a mood and a musical background story that he can build the rest of the song ontop of. The song is about a beautiful young woman that is slowly overwhelmed and brought to the brink of destruction by some deadbeat. Just imagine the guitar as playing the part of the annoying deadbeat and watch as she struggles under the weight of it. And then after it's gone Sufjan steps in to comfort her. I admit the first ten minutes aren't the kind of thing you will be rocking out to in the car years from now, but it's purpose is more weighty than that, and it succeeds gloriously.

Interesting discussion here. Imo the new EP is absolutely terrible, however, I will admit that Djohariah is one of the best songs he's ever made. Probably give it a 5/10 the 5 coming from the last track alone, and I'm really really looking forward to this so-called even longer song coming
