Considered one of the creating forces of post-rock, Slint was a band consisting of Brian McMahan (guitar and vocals), David Pajo (guitar), Britt Walford (drums), Todd Brashear (bass on Spiderland) and Ethan Buckler (bass on Tweez). They formed in Louisville, Kentucky, United States in 1986. Though they disbanded circa 1991, they continue to be a massive influence on today’s post-rock scene.
Slint’s first album Tweez was recorded by legendary engineer Steve Albini in 1987 and released in obscurity on the Jennifer Hartman Records label in 1989. It was followed two years later by the critically acclaimed Spiderland, released on the legendary independent label Touch and Go Records. Considered a seminal work, Spiderland is an album characterised by its dark, syncopated rhythms, sparse guitar lines and haunting subject matters. The record’s impact was such that some have suggested it is the first true post-rock album, helping to usher in a new wave of bands seeking a move away from the unfettered aggression of hardcore punk but not its underlying ethic. The cover of Spiderland is from a series of photos of the band taken by the Louisville singer-musician Will Oldham. Spiderland culminates in the baleful “Good Morning, Captain”, perhaps their most recognised track (it would later feature on the soundtrack to the Larry Clark film Kids, though not in the film itself). Touch & Go reissued Tweez in 1993.

For information on where the term post-rock comes from and what it originally meant, the UK Post-Rock group is a good resource (http://www.last.fm/group/UK+Post-Rock). But it's important to remember that the meaning of genre terms always changes with time - so while, say, Moonshake may epitomize early UK post-rock and Tortoise may epitomize early US post-rock, Godspeed and Explosions in the Sky are the epitome of post-rock today. Also, genre terms often refer to a scene, time or place as much as they do to the actual sound and structure of the music. This is why King Crimson are progressive rock and Don Caballero are math rock. That's just what they called it at the time. Hope this makes sense.

endlesscemetary, that's a terribly limiting definition of post rock. that's describing drone or ambient. post rock is music which uses rock instrumentation in unexpected new ways. it doesn't have to sound like this or Tortoise or Disco Inferno or Bark Psychosis to be post-rock...

well, if you tend to think that there is no math-rock and bands like don caballero are post-rock, then of course slint are post-rock too. but still as many people think that there IS math-rock, just like post-rock it also moves away from traditional rock attitude, but it's atonal and agressive, closer to noise-rock and post-hardcore..just my opinion
