Halmstad, Sweden (1996 – present)

Arch Enemy is a Swedish band from Halmstad, Sweden, formed in 1996. Founded by Carcass guitarist Michael Amott along with Johan Liiva, both originally from the influential death metal band Carnage. The band has released seven studio albums, a live album (Burning Japan Live 1999), two DVDs and three EPs. The band was originally fronted by Johan Liiva, who was replaced by Angela Gossow as lead vocalist in 2000, with Gossow stepping down in March 2014 and being replaced by Alissa White-Gluz, formerly lead singer for The Agonist.

Arch Enemy, the brainchild of Michael Amott (Carcass, Carnage, and Spiritual Beggars) was originally assembled when Michael Amott left Carcass. Guitarists Michael Amott and younger brother Christopher Amott (Armageddon) joined with vocalist Johan Liiva (ex-Carnage, Furbowl, Furbowl|Devourment) and then-session drummer Daniel Erlandsson (Eucharist) in what Michael Amott called “an attempt to merge melody with aggression and technicality.”

The band’s debut, entitled Black Earth was recorded at Studio Fredman and released by the now defunct Wrong Again Records in 1996. It obtained a fair amount of success in Japan, achieving MTV rotation with their first single “Bury Me an Angel”, as well as moderate success in Sweden. At this point, Arch Enemy was more of a “solo effort” than a full band: Michael Amott wrote all the songs himself, and even played bass guitar on the album, contrary to the album’s liner notes, which listed vocalist Johan Liiva as handling bass duties. Amott later revealed that he had the credits listed that way to make the album seem more of a “band” effort.

ABHORRANCE666@ grow up dude, music is not about heaviness and who is more brutal contest, nobody expects a cannibal corpse fan to appreciate actual emotion and expression in music instead of pseudo aggression. arch enemy is shallow entry level death metal for kids just like children of bodom or amon amarth. and loomis is definitely wasting his talent, but i guess he needs to make money for his family, can't really blame him for that.

I'll miss Angela , but that was her choice , and we should respect it . In fact, she chose the Alissa on her place in AE. If you don't enjoy it , just stop to listening AE.

Emo-metal ballad is nowhere close, Nevermore were just very melodic with some faster parts and a darker atmosphere than a lot of melodic metal bands. Arch Enemy is definitely heavier, but I only liked their releases with a male vocalist. If we're approaching it from that direction, though, Conquering Dystopia is crushing compared to Arch Enemy.

Its funny how people talk about Arch Enemy being a a downgrade for Jeff Loomis. Nevermore was one giant emo-metal ballad and makes Arch Enemy sound brutal in comparison. Jeff Loomis is an amazing musician, but you people talk like his other work is sooo much heavier. As for the female thing, both women sound stronger than Liiva (even with Angela's processing and Alissa is their strongest, finally a vocalist that isn't all throat, but more gut). Liiva literally hollered in arbitrary pitch and time, and couldn't scream/growl to save his life.

I find the whole female fronted metal tag idea silly, especially when I consider their early material to have the best vocals. As to who Jeff Loomis is, I'd go as far as to say that he's the best neo-classical metal guitarist because of his composing style. In particular, try this:

Jeff is the former guitar player and co-founder of Nevermore. Now he creates his own instrumental music. A great musician with his own style. Glad to hear, he's participating in the Arch Enemy's tour.
