Biography

Halmstad, Sweden (1996 – present)

Arch Enemy is a Swedish band from Halmstad, Sweden, formed in 1996. Founded by Carcass guitarist Michael Amott along with Johan Liiva, both originally from the influential death metal band Carnage. The band has released seven studio albums, a live album (Burning Japan Live 1999), two DVDs and three EPs. The band was originally fronted by Johan Liiva, who was replaced by Angela Gossow as lead vocalist in 2000, with Gossow stepping down in March 2014 and being replaced by Alissa White-Gluz, formerly lead singer for The Agonist.

Arch Enemy, the brainchild of Michael Amott (Carcass, Carnage, and Spiritual Beggars) was originally assembled when Michael Amott left Carcass. Guitarists Michael Amott and younger brother Christopher Amott (Armageddon) joined with vocalist Johan Liiva (ex-Carnage, Furbowl, Furbowl|Devourment) and then-session drummer Daniel Erlandsson (Eucharist) in what Michael Amott called “an attempt to merge melody with aggression and technicality.”

The band’s debut, entitled Black Earth was recorded at Studio Fredman and released by the now defunct Wrong Again Records in 1996. It obtained a fair amount of success in Japan, achieving MTV rotation with their first single “Bury Me an Angel”, as well as moderate success in Sweden. At this point, Arch Enemy was more of a “solo effort” than a full band: Michael Amott wrote all the songs himself, and even played bass guitar on the album, contrary to the album’s liner notes, which listed vocalist Johan Liiva as handling bass duties. Amott later revealed that he had the credits listed that way to make the album seem more of a “band” effort.

Judging from the horribly over-produced vocals by Angela and Alissa on the last few albums, the next album will be fronted by Siri (with Scarlett Johansson for the live shows of course).

I can't decide between Angela and Alissa. Both are great singers and each one's drive vocals have peculiarities making them unique.

Alissa vocals aren't that different from Angela's to be honest. Still: Johan > Angela and Alissa

Alissa is not bad. Problem is Michael Amott imo. After Chris left the band, War Eternal is their worst album so far. I'm a big fan since Wages of Sin. This album reminds me 3th class Atari games soundtracks. Boring.

Moderately impressed by the new album. It's a little bit too sleek and polished for my tastes but there are some great catchy tunes and the vocals are solid. The UK tour with Kreator should be a cracker!

I decided to give Alissa a try, and started listening to The Agonist and now new Arch Enemy. Alissa fits in damn well, imo the perfect follower for Angela! Love both of em. They're both different, so I'll take the hate and say Angela = Alissa.

I've seen Arch Enemy live couple of times, but during that time I wasn't really into melodic death. 2 years ago during Khaos legions tour they really got me and I had the best chance to headbang myself to death. Now I can't wait to see them with Alissa. \\m/

I was a very casual fan of the band till this point but with the new album i'm 100% into it. For me, Alissa >> Angela. (7) But that's just a slightly as I love Angela's vocals too :D

I honestly think War Eternal is a very average album. Alissa is good, but Angela is much better in my opinion
