Biography

Halmstad, Sweden (1996 – present)

Arch Enemy is a Swedish band from Halmstad, Sweden, formed in 1996. Founded by Carcass guitarist Michael Amott along with Johan Liiva, both originally from the influential death metal band Carnage. The band has released seven studio albums, a live album (Burning Japan Live 1999), two DVDs and three EPs. The band was originally fronted by Johan Liiva, who was replaced by Angela Gossow as lead vocalist in 2000, with Gossow stepping down in March 2014 and being replaced by Alissa White-Gluz, formerly lead singer for The Agonist.

Arch Enemy, the brainchild of Michael Amott (Carcass, Carnage, and Spiritual Beggars) was originally assembled when Michael Amott left Carcass. Guitarists Michael Amott and younger brother Christopher Amott (Armageddon) joined with vocalist Johan Liiva (ex-Carnage, Furbowl, Furbowl|Devourment) and then-session drummer Daniel Erlandsson (Eucharist) in what Michael Amott called “an attempt to merge melody with aggression and technicality.”

The band’s debut, entitled Black Earth was recorded at Studio Fredman and released by the now defunct Wrong Again Records in 1996. It obtained a fair amount of success in Japan, achieving MTV rotation with their first single “Bury Me an Angel”, as well as moderate success in Sweden. At this point, Arch Enemy was more of a “solo effort” than a full band: Michael Amott wrote all the songs himself, and even played bass guitar on the album, contrary to the album’s liner notes, which listed vocalist Johan Liiva as handling bass duties. Amott later revealed that he had the credits listed that way to make the album seem more of a “band” effort.

I don't get the point of having a female vocalist if they're going to make her sound like a badly auto-tuned male growler. [4] The vocalist from Oathbreaker perfectly shows the potential virtues of female vocals in metal compared to someone like Angela Gossow.

Yeah complete waste of talent for Loomis. I think he just wants to make some money again, because his other bands don't make enough profit. I highly doubt he'll have much creative input and even if so, then he'll be forced to write in typical Arch Enemy style.

Sorry, got my Ammott brothers confused. Reminds me, I need to try Spiritual beggars again...enjoy sludge metal like Ghost Brigade these days, unlike when I first heard them.

However, if they let Jeff Loomis compose their new material, then MAYBE this will work out. I doubt their rhythm section has half the talent he's worked with in his solo work/Conquering Dystopia/Nevermore, though, based on what I've heard.

First they wasted Tony Ammott's talent and then Alissa's, now it's Jeff Loomis...I might actually end up fucking hating this band in time. Focusing entirely on metal is what makes it such a stale genre to many, damn it.

You know, as someone who feels that Michael Amott has been running out of ideas and riffs since around the same time they fired Johan and brought in Angela (a move, I'm still convinced, was done for cheap publicity from the novelty of having a female growler), I'm actually pretty stoked about Jeff Loomis joining the band. Hopefully he'll bring in some new ideas and a new dynamic so they can finally stop rehashing Wages of Sin for the hundredth time.

Well now he won't have to bother about making both ends meet. He didn't join Arch Enemy, it's AE who joined him...

Pretty good set overall. Kreator was more energetic. Arch Enemy played a little bit slower than usual and played too many of their slow, boring We Will Rise/No Gods No Masters anthems. But they threw in some good shit too like Dead Bury Their Dead, Dead Eyes, and Nemesis! Nick nailed Chris's leads. Live vocals were actually well done and strong.

    This band is shit (maybe except for the first two-three albums) but the new girl is stunning, I fell in love with her. Did you hear her Quebecois accent when she spoke French? :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3
