Biography

Halmstad, Sweden (1996 – present)

Arch Enemy is a Swedish band from Halmstad, Sweden, formed in 1996. Founded by Carcass guitarist Michael Amott along with Johan Liiva, both originally from the influential death metal band Carnage. The band has released seven studio albums, a live album (Burning Japan Live 1999), two DVDs and three EPs. The band was originally fronted by Johan Liiva, who was replaced by Angela Gossow as lead vocalist in 2000, with Gossow stepping down in March 2014 and being replaced by Alissa White-Gluz, formerly lead singer for The Agonist.

Arch Enemy, the brainchild of Michael Amott (Carcass, Carnage, and Spiritual Beggars) was originally assembled when Michael Amott left Carcass. Guitarists Michael Amott and younger brother Christopher Amott (Armageddon) joined with vocalist Johan Liiva (ex-Carnage, Furbowl, Furbowl|Devourment) and then-session drummer Daniel Erlandsson (Eucharist) in what Michael Amott called “an attempt to merge melody with aggression and technicality.”

The band’s debut, entitled Black Earth was recorded at Studio Fredman and released by the now defunct Wrong Again Records in 1996. It obtained a fair amount of success in Japan, achieving MTV rotation with their first single “Bury Me an Angel”, as well as moderate success in Sweden. At this point, Arch Enemy was more of a “solo effort” than a full band: Michael Amott wrote all the songs himself, and even played bass guitar on the album, contrary to the album’s liner notes, which listed vocalist Johan Liiva as handling bass duties. Amott later revealed that he had the credits listed that way to make the album seem more of a “band” effort.

@RealThoughtt Tell me more... Female vocals so what? Are you sexist? Alissa sounds awesome and so did Angela and there's nothing gay about it. Don't have the balls to listen to a female singer? Right

I've been noticing that old school fans are desperately trying to blame Alissa for the way that Arch Enemy changed on their last album, just like The Agonist fans are blaming Vicky for their new "soft edges". But the thing is that if Michael and the rest of the band would not agree with it, they just wouldn't do it! Personally, I think that AE made a very wise choice on War Eternal, exploring paths they never did before. It's refreshing for the band, for the fans and for the music itself. I'm a great Alissa fan since her days on The Agonist and I think she did fit Arch Enemy as well as Angela did. And... The fact that Angela herself chose Alissa and told Michael that she was the best choice to do it should be considered.

@Huevas, At first I thought it was a marketing move or somethng like that (just a prejudice), but when I started listen her carefully I realized she sounds even better and more versatile than Angela (IMO).

Judging from the horribly over-produced vocals by Angela and Alissa on the last few albums, the next album will be fronted by Siri (2)
