Canada (2007 – present)

The Agonist (formerly The Tempest) is a band from Canada, signed to Century Media Records. Hailing from Montreal, The Agonist comprises vocalist Vicky Psarakis, guitarist Danny Marino, bassist Chris Kells, and drummer Simon McKay. Previous members include founding member and former lead singer Alissa White-Gluz.

They released their first album Once Only Imagined on August 14, 2007. Released August 28, 2007, the video for Business Suits and Combat Boots was filmed by acclaimed director David Brodsky (Strapping Young Lad, Gwar, God Forbid)… The video was voted the number 6 video of the year 2007 on MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball. The mini-video for … and Their Eulogies Sang Me to Sleep off the album Lullabies for the Dormant Mind, also filmed by director David Brodsky, was released April 18, 2009.

The Agonist was originally known primarily for White-Gluz’s ability to use both clean vocals and metal growls. Guitarist Danny Marino, nephew of guitar legend Frank Marino (of Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush), uses a melodic yet aggressive guitar style, making The Agonist’s music both catchy and heavy. The Agonist can also be identified by their creative basslines by Chris Kells, and Simon McKay’s intense and energetic drumming. Also known for their environmental consciousness, song’s themes often revolve around moral concerns such as animal rights, societal dilemmas, and the state of our world.

It's not exactly that she left. She wanted to do similar thing to Floor Jansen who perfectly manages to play with Revamp and Nightwish. Other members didn't like it even though she would still retain a lot of focus on The Agonist and decided to kick her out. Shame, because she's awesome.

To people saying you'll miss Alissa's vocals: Arch Enemy's next album might include them but this one was already musically ready with many guitar parts so they preferred to leave it as it is with only growling. In an interview one of the members said that in the future they might include some of her cleans as they know she's very talented :D

Vicky is a good replacement for Alissa and she fits into the band good but I still love Alissa and I'm glad she's in Arch Enemy.

Vicky is definitely a capable vocalist, but goddamn, it's clear Alissa was the backbone behind the songwriting. The new tracks are the same level of terrible as most of Once Only Imagined. Not enjoying such a brilliant band regressing :(

I prefer Perpetual Notion. It's not Alissas amazing clean vocal, but Vicky makes a good job.

Pertpetual notion is... meh. Just like that. I dont think it is even heavy. And, admit it, Vicky isnt that good at taking higher notes. It is a strange coincidence that Arch Enemy's second song is bad too. But still. I'm really into Disconnect Me, despite the fact it is more metalcore, and I hope The Agonist can make at least a desent album happen. It is a shame that Alissa left the band, but it is still in the future for us to see what will happen to the band itself. I hope this chane would be at least not that bad...
