Steampunk is a genre of fiction, art, design, and music which tends to draw from Victoriana and steam-based tech and industrialism with some gothic influences. Just like goth you are going to get bands that are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum, but still labeled goth. Such as Type o Negative and Bauhaus are both labeled goth but sound nothing alike. Same with steampunk. You can't say Dr. Steel is what Steampunk should sound like, then ignore the rest of the bands. Steampunk is defined more than by what you hear. It's the whole package,

@dman762000, Goth Rock started out solely as a musical genre from post-punk, with bands like Bauhaus, Siouxsie, The Cure, etc... It was later, when taking various aesthetic and culturar influences "Goth" became the movement we know nowadays.

@theclockworkdol - ive listened to at least 50 artists who either call themselves steampunk or are called it by others and i still think its mostly crap. for whatever reason, too much of it is just bad industrial/darkwave with some steampunkish lyrics. the only artists that i think succeed are the old timey style ones, and the ones that go with non-electronic elements. its the goth crossover element that i think hurts this subgenre heavily, it stands much better without help from that lot.

Actually EMO started out with bands like Rites of Spring in the mid-80's. Even early Fugazi would fall into that classification. It wasn't until the late 90's where anything that came out with whiny vocals and a "post-hardcore" sound got labelled as EMO. Steampunk on the other hand did not originate in music, unlike EMO.

I believe that folks who are putting this new umbrella term for all of our unique and eccentric styles down have not given the bands who choose to use this term to describe their music a chance. Before you pass judgment I highly encourage you to listen to more than one band and savor the variety of styles that are out there, this is not a genre in a conventional sense.
