Montreal, Canada (2010 – present)

Grimes is the alias of the musician Claire Boucher (born in 17 March 1988 in Vancouver, Canada and based in Montreal). Her music is an eclectic mix of styles which she described herself as “ADD music”, because it shifts frequently and dramatically. She fuses contemporary instrumentation with classical vocal practices.

Boucher was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. She graduated from Lord Byng Secondary School and studied ballet for 11 years. In 2006, she moved to Montreal, Canada to attend Montreal’s McGill University, studying Russian literature and later, neuroscience. During her studies, she began to record and perform under the name Grimes. While in Montreal, she began attending concerts put on by local experimental musicians at Lab Synthèse, a performance space located in an abandoned textile factory. She stopped going to McGill and decided to pursue her long life dream of becoming an electronic musician. She was taught how to make music by other students who were so desperate for food, they offered to teach her in return for some grub. YUM!

Her first release was the album Geidi Primes, issued on cassette in 2010 by Arbutus Records. It was followed in the same year by the sophomore album Halfaxa, through Arbutus Records. In 2011, Grimes released a split album with d’Eon titled Darkbloom.

In January 2012, she had signed with record label 4AD. In February 2012, Grimes released her third studio album, Visions. The album incorporates influences as wide as Enya, TLC and Aphex Twin, drawing from genres like , , , , and .

let's be honest people......she made a good decision scrapping her new album. i hate hipsters, but we have to say OBJECTIVELY that Go is a not-grimes-style song. Go is not grimes. I like Go yeah, it's a good dustep/pop/whatever song, but it's not grimes. (In fact it was written for rihanna) i admire the fact that she listens to her fans and pay attention to the critics. it's ok waiting a little bit more and then listening to the real grimes

idk it doesn't even matter anyway. Genres have always been arbitrary. Brostep isn't a genre either. It's just a characterization of music as being "of the bros who like to fucks with Skrillex". EDM Trap sounds pretty similar to me (after googling for examples), and since you don't want to have a real conversation about the difference between the two, I'll just assume that there isn't one and EDM Trap is just a more legitimized label for more or less the same thing.

The fuck? For real though. If Go isn't brostep then literally nothing has ever been brostep ever and we're all living in the darkest timeline. I ain't one to shit on something for being "mainstream", or even an attempt at it, but Go is the product of too many outside influences. I think that since she's separated herself (Claire) from her main project (Grimes) she easily could've released it under a different project name, with Blood Diamonds as an equal member. That way Blood Diamonds gets a fair shake and the public reception would be way more positive, because we wouldn't have the Grimes brand being polluted by something that is nowhere near the Grimes style.

@slow-chan OK then, could you please define in detail the difference between brostep and whatever genre you think Go is?

She has dropped al the new songs she had written for her coming album after a lot of negatieve reactions from fans on the song: "Go" and starts from scratch for her new album. That must be really hard for her, but much respect for listening to her fans! Source:
