Subterranean Homesick Alien (4:27)

Cover of OK Computer

From OK Computer and 29 other releases

Originally called “Uptight,” which is how Jonny referred to it in its early stages, the song pays homage to Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” It deals with alien abduction and stems from two incidents in Thom’s life. The first occured at Abingdon School, when he was assigned an essay question that went something like this: “If you were an alien from another planet arriving on Earth, how would you describe what you saw?” The second incident occurred when Thom was driving down a country road and hit a bird (which he believes was a pheasant). He stepped out of the car and at that moment began thinking about alien abduction.

All these weird creatures who lock up their spirits, drill holes in themselves and live for their secrets.

This song pretty much defines isolation and loneliness for me. One of Radiohead's best.

Is it strange that I used to sing this to my kid as a lullaby?

Highlight of this song are actually lyrics, which is rare for radiohead even though music is amazing. To me it just seems like they made all these alien sounds just for lyrics instead of the other way around. Especially the second half, maybe my favourite ever

The beginning guitar tone is out of this world. [2] Strings are insane in this song, so beautiful. Thom's voice is amazing in this track.

Listened by itself, not as good as Let Down and Karma Police but when listening to the album from start to finish, this is a huge highlight.
