I Will Survive (5:09)

Cover of Fashion Nugget

From Fashion Nugget and 20 other releases

Cake covered “I Will Survive” in 1996 on the album Fashion Nugget. This is Gloria Gaynor’s least favorite version of the song, due to its use of profanity: lead singer John McCrea altered the line “I should have changed that stupid lock” to “I should have changed my fucking lock.”

The music video for Cake’s version features John McCrea as a parking control officer who is writing tickets in San Francisco, often at the expense of normally happy people (such as a newly wed couple). This is combined with footage of Todd Roper playing in the streets, Victor Damiani playing on top of a car, and Greg Brown playing in a crowded courtyard. The runner from the video for “The Distance” is seen running by in the background of one scene [02:01].

Great. Never heard this version before. S'pose this demonstrates a true artist -it is so nearly awful but it is actually brilliant. :)

These guys are one of my favourite bands of all time. I just love the unstated, low-fi quality of their music. And the elements man! Funk country, hip hop and and Cake has the tightest rythm section on all time. Solid beats and funky bass. Oh and Comfort Eagle is the heaviest song of all time! Fact.

That guitar lick is air-guitar worthy.

It sounds precisely like something Cake would write. I wish this was the original, it sounds so natural, funky, sarcastic, and snarky.

I told my mother-in-law I wanted Cake and Garbage for Christmas. Her incomprehension was priceless.
