Biography

Brooklyn, New York, United States (1982 – present)

They Might Be Giants (TMBG) are an American band formed in 1982 in Brooklyn, New York, United States by John Flansburgh (vocals, guitar) and John Linnell (vocals, keyboards, accordion). During TMBG’s early years Flansburgh and Linnell were frequently accompanied by a drum machine. In the early nineties, TMBG became a full band. Currently, the members of TMBG are Flansburgh, Linnell, Marty Beller, Dan Miller, and Danny Weinkauf. They are best known for an unconventional and experimental style of alternative music. Over their career, the group has found success on the modern rock and CMJ charts. More recently they have found success in the children’s music genre, and in theme music for several television programs and films.
To date, TMBG have released 14 studio albums. Flood has been certified platinum and their children’s music album Here Come the ABCs has been certified gold. The band also won a Grammy Award in 2002 for their song “Boss of Me”, which served as the theme to Malcolm in the Middle. The band has sold over 4 million records.

Linnell and Flansburgh (often nicknamed “the two Johns” or “John and John”) first met as teenagers growing up in Lincoln, Massachusetts. They began writing songs together while attending Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School but didn’t officially form a band at that time.

btw, i've just found out, that Tesla is one of the best track of the album. It so cute and tragic at the same time. yeah it sounds quite boring, but after couple listenings you'll feel how it emotional

They Might Be Giants is even better live! If you want to listen to some live sessions of theirs, they recently stopped by KDHX studios and recorded a couple of songs. Check it out here at http://go.kdhx.org/theymightbegiants31513

Join Us had more filler I think. Only weak track on Nanobots is Tesla, which is just offensively boring.

After some contemplation, I think I like Join Us more. Still not really sure how I feel about Nanobots on its own.

Nanobots is a great album, much better than Join Us imo. Also love the Fingertips-like songs in the middle.

Then again though, maybe it'll just take some time to dissect properly.

Don't know how I feel about Nanobots. It's very much the same kind of album as Join Us was, but I'm hard-pressed to say whether it's better or worse. If anything I'm a little disappointed by how similar-sounding it is.

TMBG never ceases to amaze me when I see them live. Seeing them in Columbus this past weekend marked my 3rd time going to one of their shows and they were absolutely fantastic, as usual. Nanobots is a wonderful album... definitely one of my faves. :)

I like them both a lot, but I'm not so sure that they're all that similar. Other than both being dismissed as novelty acts by stupid people.

the Ween comparison is really spot on though. Ween get too much flack for being a joke band and TMBG for being "geek rock" or whatever when in reality they're both great bands with some odd/cool tendencies, all you TMBG dudes who never got into Ween should do so

The new album is classic TMBG and easily the best since The Spine. Maybe even the best since Mink Car. Maybe even the best since the 90s. I don't know, I need more time with the album before I make any big proclamations like that, but if nothing else, "You're On Fire" joins "Ana Ng" and "Experimental Film" atop the "best first song on a TMBG album" list.

The new album is pretty great. Pretty sure it tops Join Us and The Else for me. Not touching The Spine but not much would. Keep up the good work boys!
