Blind Guardian was founded in 1984 by André Olbrich (guitar), Hansi Kürsch (vocals, bass), Marcus Siepen (guitar) and Thomen Stauch (drums), (left the band in 2005, replaced by Frederik Ehmke). Before calling themselves Blind Guardian, the band released two demos under the name Lucifer’s Heritage in 1985 and 1986.

Blind Guardian has always been inspired by the fictional worlds of fantasy writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien, Michael Moorcock, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman as well as traditional legends and epics. Stephen King’s Dark Tower series has also been an influence on the band, evident in “Somewhere Far Beyond” as well as numerous Demons & Wizards songs. Over the years, a running theme has developed associating the band members with traveling bards.

The line-up has been the same since 1988, but in 2005 the drummer, Thomas Stauch, left the band due to the direction the band was taking in their last studio albums, “Nightfall In Middle-Earth” and “A Night at the Opera”. He was replaced by Frederik Ehmke.

Somewhere far Beyond was my first metal album, now almost 15 years ago. I like Battalions and Follow the Blind for their raw sound. I disliked them in the beginning, but grew real fond of them. The Forgotten Tales have the most haunting melodies. Nightfall in Middle Earth was like an epic, that had to unfold. There were just some songs I liked at first, maybe like the most, it was Valhalla and Mirror Mirror. But Time stands still on the Iron Hill must have grown to be one of my all time favourites. Night at the Opera was in fact the first album of Blind Guardian, that didn't speak to me. Technically proficient, something was missing. Was it to sterile, I don't know, maybe to much energy went into over thinking the arrangement. I never thought Blind Guardian would get one of the bands, where I say:" I like the old stuff." Blind Guardian was one of the bands, that paved my road to music taste. There are many memories of some crazy live experiences. But my character limit is used up.\m/

you mean Hansi cloning himself? as in over dubbing his vocals 1000 times? I'm glad they wised up with At the Edge of Time.

Who needs guitars when you can just have more Hansi clones anyway?

"ANATO isnt really even a metal album. i cant even hear the guitars most of the time." - That follows perfectly, doesn't it?

Nighfall IS the top album, even if its scrobblings are split between "Middle Earth" (3.6 millions) and "Middle-Earth" (2.2 millions)... Opera has just 1.6... But I agree Imaginations should be on top next to Nightfall

ANATO is a superb album, but Nightfall and Imaginations really should be in the top

I don't troll like this usually, but A Night at the Opera in Top Albums? Are you serious? Please, tell me that's a bug in last.fm play count or that people mistagged Queen's masterpiece. How can it be so high? At least play counts clearly favour old-school Guardian.

Hm, I don't agree. I think new version is little different but not worst than old one. I like both.
