Founded in 1989 by Kai Hansen in Hamburg, Germany after leaving Helloween, Gamma Ray borrowed straight from the Helloween classics, and continued to pioneer Hansen's style of power metal.

After four years with Helloween, Kai Hansen decided to leave the band at the height of their career. He then went on to do some studio work with Blind Guardian.

  • @TheOnlyMAD: Avalon, from the newest album. I think it's their best song since 1999 and Armageddon! It's just breathtaking! Other than that, well... not really, I guess. I don't think Gamma Ray's point has ever been about being unique, though (if you don't count, like, the "founding" of power metal and staying with that style unique enough. Then again there was stuff like Stormwitch already so depends where you draw the line). Like many bands, they're more about doing pretty much the same thing all over again, with many hats-off to bands like Maiden, Priest, Queen, Sweet... in many of their songs in the process. They're more or less a one-trick pony, but I for one very much like that pony's tricks! :> You might also like to look forward to a new album where there will likely be two vocalists, judging from their recent live shows.
