About this album

Pre-Millennium Tension is the third album from Tricky, released in 1996. Following the unexpected success of Maxinquaye, Tricky made a much darker, more paranoid sonic landscape for this release, resulting in a more abrasive, and far less accessible album.
In an interview, Tricky said that he hated being stuck with the trip-hop tag so “That’s why I did Nearly God, and that’s why I did Pre-Millennium Tension. You can’t see them as trip-hop albums. So I just keep running away from it. But the farther you run, it’s still there. They’ll find you.”

I hated this album at first, but now I can't have enough of it. Definitely on Maxinquaye's level of greatness, if not even moreso.

Coming back to this album after so many years it is nice to see it hasn't lost any of it's intensity or relevance. If you can find it the Sessions at West 54th with Tricky (mostly this album) is amazing.

I just gotten an anxiety attack from this.... I respect the craftsmanship.... Will I listen to it again? Probably not....

Wasn't that hard for me to get into most tracks. But you also need to take time for the lyrics. And yes @leonhoekstra86 I would also say it's a lil bit better than Maxinquaye, which's still very very good and inspiring

Great stuff. The atmosphere on this record is beyond words, I get a unique mix of feelings such as loneliness and cold bitterness towards our whole society, while still having that soft and warm feeling of importance of my own existence. Great use of unique sounds and beats. Also, the booklet and cover art is exceptionally beautiful and fitting.

Hard to get into, but if you take the time.. well, I think it is at least as good as Maxinquaye, maybe even a little bit better

perhaps his "hardest-to-get-into" album, still doesn't "open" to me, but I will keep trying, maybe someday it will unfold :)
