“Not the Same Anymore” is an extremely melancholy and nostalgic track from Julian, singing about his past actions and how they have afflicted relationships in his life. He implicates himself as the cause of the end of many relationships, citing his inability to change and be reliable as main reasons, even revealing that he may have become violent in some situations.
The track features a very different attitude towards the past than its predecessor in the track listing “Why Are Sundays So Depressing?,” showing how Julian may regret having been so avant garde about breaking off past relationships carelessly.
One of the slowest songs on "The New Abnormal", the track features a very full percussion line. Occasional guitar lines coming in during the verses, while more full instrumentation from Albert and Nikolai comes in during the chorus sections of the song.
The rhythm guitar in the chorus sounds very much like some old Strokes tunes, which may be on purpose. These chords played in downstrums only, perfectly synchron to the drums is such an iconic strokes thing. Nothing is the same anymore, but there is still something left from the old days.
