About this album

Lovedrive is a studio album by the German heavy metal band Scorpions, released in 1979. Michael Schenker, younger brother of rhythm guitarist Rudolf Schenker, performed lead guitar on 3 songs.

This was the first album to feature Matthias Jabs as the band’s new full-time lead guitarist, replacing Ulrich Jon Roth. Jabs was originally chosen in mid 1978, recorded the album, but left shortly after completion to make way for Michael Schenker’s return. After three months’ touring, however, Jabs rejoined the band and Michael Schenker left, and Jabs has been with the band ever since. The recruitment of Jabs also coincided with a major evolution of the band’s sound, which exhibited a new Van Halen-style energy for Lovedrive.

The risqué cover, created by the design firm Hipgnosis, caused some controversy upon the album’s release and was initially sold wrapped in paper. The album’s provocative artwork was named “Best album sleeve of 1979” by Playboy magazine. Later pressings of the album bore a simple design of a blue scorpion on a black background.

The album ranked 25 on IGN’s list of the top 25 metal albums.

The RIAA certified ‘Lovedrive’ as Gold on May 28th 1986.

Awesome cover, actually, only in USA the cover was hated, and Klaus said that there (USA) always in the concerts were naked tits in the first line of the crowd, so I don't know why you some people hate it.

Scorpions left RCA for Mercury Records in the States and Harvest/EMI Electrola worldwide to record their album Lovedrive. Just weeks after being ejected from UFO for his alcohol abuse, Michael Schenker also returned to the group for a short period during the recordings for the album. This gave the band three guitarists (though Schenker's contribution to the final release was limited to only three songs). The result was Lovedrive, an album which some critics consider to be the pinnacle of their career. Containing such fan favorites as "Loving You Sunday Morning", "Always Somewhere", "Holiday" and the instrumental "Coast to Coast", it firmly cemented the 'Scorpions formula' of hard rock songs mixed with melodic ballads. The album's provocative artwork was named "Best album sleeve of 1979" by Playboy Magazine yet ultimately changed for American release. Lovedrive reached #55 on the US charts, demonstrating that the band was gathering an international following. -- Good music and cover!
