Biography

Extremely versatile and respected French singer-songwriter. His music is a crossover of , , and . Active since the 70s, Renaud has written some very controversial songs during his musical career, the most famous one (to British readers at least) praising all women as being better than men except Margaret Thatcher, saying that if he comes back as a dog in his next life, he will use her as a lampost… He is famously recovering from alcoholism with some degree of success.

The most iconic song to many French people, and possibly the song that put him on the map, was the huge 70’s French hit “Laisse Béton” (the story - told with a great deal of humour - of someone who enters a bar and gets mugged for everything he owns, from his leather jacket, to his jeans, his boots, and ends up in an alley without any clothes on).

Renaud ‘came back’ in 2002 with a huge hit ‘Manhattan-Kaboul’ (featuring Belgian singer Axelle Red), comparing the lives of a Puerto Rican in NYC to an Afghan girl in Kabul in 2001. This song catapulted his latest album to the top of the charts and earned him various awards in France. His latest album was published in october 2006 and was called “Rouge sang”.

Thank you for good update on Renaud! I think all his old and new albums are enjoyable. At least when irish flutes don't dominate the music altogether

He had to face criticism due to his relationship with a young blonde (assuming, you know, the usual) and talking openly about his alcoholism and depression issues. At least he's always been honest, something the media and modern society usually despise... I guess some people dislike his communist beliefs as well, even more so since one of his recent songs "Elle est facho", depicting a blue-eyed, blond-haired female right-wing supporter, is deemed racist by some. I personally don't think it was racist, at least certainly not intentionally, just sadly clichéd and awkward. Also, the fact his albums of the past decade have been quite generic and a bit "commercial" according to some (they're still okay but let's face it, they lack the "rebel" side that most people loved about his classic releases). Either way, to me he's still very unique and every album he did in the 80s has become classic.

Do I see 1 or maybe 2 shouts for calling Renaud a "gros con"? I'm just itching to know why? Has he tried to evade taxes like monsieur Dipardiouuu? or is it just that he has had the indecency to turn 60 years of age?... Pray tell me the reason to call a great artist like Renaud a "gros con"?
