Nightwish is a band, formed in the town of Kitee, Finland in 1996. The band currently consists of Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards), Marco Hietala (bass, vocals), Emppu Vuorinen (guitars), Jukka Nevalainen (drums and percussion).

On the 1st of October Nightwish made a statement; Nightwish and lead vocalist Anette Olzon have “decided to part company, in mutual understanding, for the good of all parties involved”. Olzon was vocalist for Nightwish from 2006-2012.

The statement continued on to say that “Nightwish has no intention of cancelling any upcoming shows, and as a result we have decided to bring in a substitute vocalist starting in Seattle 1.10.2012. Floor Jansen from The Netherlands (ex-After Forever, ReVamp), and she has graciously stepped in to help Nightwish complete the Imaginaerum world tour.”

Anette Olzon was announced to be the replacement for former vocalist and frontwoman Tarja Turunen in 2007 after the latter was fired in 2005. She has appeared on Dark Passion Play, Made in Hong Kong (And in Various Other Places) and Imaginaerum, as well as the two-year Dark Passion Play tour.

The band’s leader, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, composes songs that are often classified as either or ; their musical style has also been described as a symphonic metal variant, called and even in some cases called ‘epic metal’.
Nevertheless, Nightwish is considered one of the main developers of the genre, which encompasses similar bands such as Within Temptation, Therion, Epica, Edenbridge, Lunatica, and Visions of Atlantis.

So http://www.last.fm/music/Tarja/+images/90723749 http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/8819/8zz.png I'm going to be disappointed when this album has no Celtic folk metal songs :< vv I hope they make their goal. "We will announce more singers in the coming months!" Wouldn't it be more prudent to announce that now?

I like this song, though, which is probably the cheesiest thing I've ever heard. Maybe I'll try some more Hammerfall once Spotify releases a stable update. That Avalon video is so sterile looking... ugh, it looks like it was shot in a hospital room. I bet 90% of the people who watched it did so because of Elize's booty shake thing at 1:27 (because they're also apparently psychic and knew it would happen?)

Agreed. As a huge Stratovarius fan and a huge Amaranthe fan, Avalon was pretty disappointing. Nemesis on the other hand, is incredible.

For me they're just not catchy enough. I can't even remember how any of their songs go. I saw that video and was amused at how apparently everyone is Elizing up their videos now, this one being particularly amusing because the only other person in there is Timo, who it's implied used to be in a relationship with her. Also the way it was shot is quite striking, heavy backlight through her thin dress, the most memorable part of the video. Song isn't bad but the rest of the album is mostly meh.

I did mean internet friends though, my IRL friends either think Nightwish is good/decent, or have never heard them. Also sorry I'm not entering Tarja's contest but I did make commander Shepard pretty today

I don't have a friend who thinks Nightwish is utter garbage, and I want one [2]

I also believe that all music is far more enjoyable while saving mankind with your emerald sword. [2] I sensed that you were genuinely interested, that's why I answered as I did :) But I'm not trying to convince anyone they're good; I have a number of friends who think Nightwish is utter garbage, which is fine with me.

@ nDroae: your comments on genres and tagging are fair enough. A lot of seemingly-niche labels eventually become an umbrella term for the lazy, which is a bit of a shame. I do not think that it's necessary to label or "tag" Nightwish to enjoy them, and I certainly do not intend to pigeonhole them without first hearing the majority of their discography. But I do find the varying tags - and even more varying opinions - to be pretty interesting.

@ Jirk: ironically enough, in my youth, I was all about FF titles and Nobuo. For a while there, I had very little interest in music outside of the soundtracks for FF7-9. This was around the time I was in junior high - putting me at... 11? - and while Nobuo's compositions are often well done and beautiful, I'm pretty grateful that I (eventually) branched out into legitimate bands. A wild ride it has been, to be sure. // Bummed that Trexxy has ran out of things to say. I guess the playing field is significantly different when she's on her own turf. I am amused at the amount of offensive remarks she's made, though, despite me showing zero aggression in this shoutbox. Though I guess I shouldn't be surprised at this point. // @ Believe: thanks for sharing that video. Do people legitimately listen to Rhapsody Of Fire? If I was into either D&D or larping, I think that'd be my jam. I also believe that all music is far more enjoyable while saving mankind with your emerald sword.

Andrew WK's Party Hard is symphonic metal because it's hard rock with a piano in it <3 Ah, Hammerfall... "The little scrolling ticker read, I deceive you not, "Blowjob is better than no job." What can I say, they're Swedes :P But does that mean receiving blowjobs or giving them?" Yeah Elli I made those in 2009 http://www.last.fm/group/The+%22New%22+Nightwish/forum/56956/_/586020 it turned out totally ace when I got it right about "the dream" being fulfilled in 2011

You tagged Nightwish with ‘symphonic whimsy metal’. 1 minute ago "Hammerfall is the pride and joy in Sweden." lol I thought that was ABBA. Also, I think Wanky died of rage.

Well you're name sutis you. It really does. But hey I don't go around calling bands something they are not. I also don't go around making genres up that are not real. Really what the fuck is gothic metal? symphonic metal? please tell me what the hell that is. And really stop calling a band symphcore and symphonic whimsy metal when they are not even playing in those genres. People like you make shit up all the time.
