About this album

Tigerlily is an album by singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant, released on June 20, 1995. It is her first solo album after splitting from the 10,000 Maniacs. The album received mixed reviews, with many praising Merchant’s confessional writing style, and other criticizing the same for undue sentimentality

The song “River” is a tribute to River Phoenix. Tigerlily peaked at #13 on Billboard’s Top 200 album countdown. It contained three pop hits, “Carnival” (#10), “Wonder” (#20), and “Jealousy” (#23)

Tigerlily was re-released in 1999 as a 2-cd set, with the second cd containing a remix of the song Jealousy and live cuts from her tour.

This record is still one that I start when I lack inspiration for anything else. Probably a sign of quality... I love her voice, and the record is very very good. It is one of those records that I never grow tired of but that never really made it to my top (where many of them stay a very short time)

When my daughter was about 7, i took her to see Natalie Merchant. It was the very first live rock show i ever took her to. She is now entering her Junior year at UCLA, and to this day, Carnival is still one of our mutually favorite songs.
