About this album
Foo Fighters is the debut album by the Foo Fighters, recorded entirely by frontman Dave Grohl. It was released in 1995 through Roswell and Capitol Records. It was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 1996 Grammy ceremony, but it lost to Dave Grohl’s former band Nirvana’s album MTV Unplugged In New York. Dave Grohl has often called the Foo Fighters’ debut piece to be more of a demo than an album.
Nearly all of the album’s instrumental parts are performed by Dave Grohl. (The lone exception is a guitar part on “X-Static” provided by Afghan Whigs member Greg Dulli, with whom Grohl had performed as part of an all-star band on the 1994 Backbeat soundtrack.)
The Foo Fighters band, originally consisting of bassist Nate Mendel, guitarist Pat Smear, and drummer William Goldsmith, was formed by Grohl after the completion of the album in order to promote it on tour. Despite not appearing on the album itself, the band is featured in the liner notes and was paid royalties for the album.
Grohl had been recording his own music for years prior, releasing a cassette called Pocketwatch (under the moniker “Late!”) during his time in Nirvana. The album was recorded in October 1994 in Robert Lang’s Studio in Seattle with friend/producer Barrett Jones. This was the same studio where Nirvana recorded its last session just nine months prior.

This album is so underrated, from Good Grief to Exhausted these songs are such a great blend bitter sweet song writting with early 90's energy. The man played every singled instrument himself (save guitar on like 2 songs or something). Just an incredible album!

It's joyous day compared with the black night of In Utero (in a good way). I just wished the later albums didn't sound so same-y. The Colour and the Shape is another excellent album, so is "There Is Nothing Left to Lose" (Learn to Fly!)

I was 11 years old and had just gotten into Nirvana like 2 weeks before Kurt offed himself and then I got this album for my birthday and loved the hell out of it for about a year, and haven't listened to it since...until now. And damn...its just as good now as it was back then. I've been so turned off by what the Foos have done in the last 5 years that I've forgotten what they did in their infancy. This is like a completely different band on this album.

I love the foo's, especially their debut album (actually really Dave Ghrol being Dave Ghrol). It is probably my second favorite album from them after the colour and the shape. Seems like this album was well kept secret. Which is sad because Exhausted is an amazing song. The riffs are aweome over the fuzzy and static background on the song. It has this raw, almost lo-fi feel to it. I also love the cheek and tounge lyrics of This is a Call. Dave Ghrol is a underrated genius.
