(2007 – present)

Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band is the name of US alt-country musician Conor Oberst and his backing band composed of Nik Freitas (guitar), Taylor Hollingsworth (guitar), Macey Taylor (bass), Nate Walcott (keyboards/organ) and Jason Boesel (drums).

Conor Oberst played 2 shows @ 400 Bar in Minneapolis, MN on the 29th and 30th of December, 2007 with Nik Freitas on Guitars, Jason Boesel on Drums, Macey Taylor on Bass and Nate Walcott on Keyboards and the French Horn. During the show he made it clear that the band was not Bright Eyes and that they had yet to select a band name. A show on the 1st of February has them billed as ‘Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band.’ The Mystic Valley Band includes Taylor Hollingsworth as lead guitarist.

In November 2007, it was reported that Oberst would work on a solo record with Jake Bellows, and that he and M. Ward would start a band and perform two late December shows in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Contrary to what was believed, the shows were not played with M. Ward, but rather with Nik Freitas and Jason Boesel. They played 13 new songs and 3 Bright Eyes songs. They also played a show in February in Mexico City, Mexico.

Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band have announced that they will be playing at the 2008 Reading and Leeds Festivals. In addition, they will also be performing at the Electric Picnic in Ireland in August 2008, the Austin City Limits festival in September and also at the Great Escape Festival in Sydney, Australia in early October 2008.

Yep. I completely agree. I've always thought it sad not to have a physical copy of that awesome EP. But this is even better than a proper release of Gentlemen's EP. I think this might be the release of the year. Just might.

according to conor oberst, it IS a solo ablum, and not his ONLY solo album at that. there are many differences between his solo work and the mvb. for starters, conor is the only one singing in his solo album, which is not true for the mvb. conor's music in his solo album is also much more lovey-dovey and sweet, like bright eyes, where as the mvb isn't. conor came up with the music and the lyrics for his solo work, where as everyone in the band helped out with the music and lyrics for the mvb. bright eyes is like his solo album because it's all conor with the help of other people with ONLY playing instruments for the music HE came up with, the mvb isn't like bright eyes because it's a collaborative work, NOT only conor's ideas.

but you're not listening to me. the album that you're saying as his 'solo work' is not really his solo work. It is an album that is under MVB. So overall, there are two mvb albums and ZERO solo albums.

doesn't matter, the lyrical content he put in his solo album is not the same that he put under the mvb. you need to listen to the lyrics and not just his voice. both albums are very different, where his solo work is closely related to bright eyes, and mvb not. if you had listened to the lyrics, you would have chosen songs like milk thistle, lenders in the temple and danny callahan as examples to compare to bright eyes, which, btw, are under his solo work.

Oh so this is where the misunderstanding comes from. Conor's solo work is indeed part of MVB. Even though the cd cover/album art only said his name on it, it was supposed to be MVB. The whole mvb crew helped with that supposedly 'solo' album. So to be correct, it's actually MVB work.

ALSO, you're confusing Conor's solo work with MVB. Cape Canaveral and the Eagle on a Pole version you are thinking about are part of his solo work which are not MVB. I've said this before, and I'll say it again, Conor's solo work could pass under Bright Eyes, the lyrical content matches, I completely agree with that, but his work with the MVB does not.

lawl. that's not the only song where conor isn't the one singing. i'm not talking about conor's voice, i'm talking about lyrical content. the lyrics from mvb just aren't bright eyesish. there are two different eagle on a pole songs with completely different lyrics. simon joyner even helped out with the lyrics for the mvb version. so, yes, mvb is not like bright eyes: the lyrics for their songs just wouldn't flow with the rest of bright eyes. perhaps if you listened to more bright eyes and then listened to ALL of mvb, including the live songs, you would get it. conor even plays lua live with the mvb and it just seems too out of place.

Okay aqua teen, I feel like debating so I'm gonna disagree with you. Ready? Conor is an Oberst. It's in his blood. Moving from band to band doesn't mean that he's different. He is going to be the same dude with the same voice box wherever he is destined. MVB could definitely pass as a BE album. Why? Why dammit? Because his voice is the same. Sure it's more upbeat in MVB but it's still sad. Fast or slow tempo, it's still the same ol' Conor that we all love. Just check out Cape Canaveral, or Eagle on a Pole...o wait, just put it on shuffle and I guarantee you that the sad twang will be present in all the songs. The only exception to this is Air Mattress, where some gutsy mystic dude decided to do vocals (lmao)..but I like that song nonetheless.

i'm talking about reality. in reality, bright eyes is not supposed to equal mvb. i'm just trying to explain why mvb doesn't sound like bright eyes, and they really don't. conor oberst's solo work could pass under bright eyes, but mvb could not. i think the lyrical content is just too different to be compared to bright eyes, even if they were labeled as bright eyes, i think it would be too different.

Victoria, let me one-up you on that. Conor could have easily released MVB work under Bright Eyes and I bet Bright Eyes-only worshipers would be ecstatically loving it. It's all placebo.

bright eyes does not equal MVB. there's a reason artists branch out, they want to try new things too. it's not fair to say MVB isn't good because they're not like bright eyes. if conor wanted to make more music like bright eyes, he would have released it under bright eyes, not MVB or his solo work.

A Bright Eyes fan probably won't like this. A Conor Oberst fan will. There's a difference. It's obvious to me which I am.

I listened to Outer South today - the first time in a long time - and I just generally like everything about it. There's not a lot to love, but there is a lot to like.
