About this album

Virgin Records America (2009) Released: 29 Sep 2009 11 tracks (54:03)
Black Gives Way to Blue is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Alice in Chains, which was released on September 29, 2009. The first Alice in Chains album in nearly fourteen years, Black Gives Way to Blue is their first release with new vocalist William DuVall, who replaced the late Layne Staley. Black Gives Way to Blue marks the first Alice in Chains album released on Virgin Records, their first venture away from Columbia, who released all of their previous releases.

The span of nearly fourteen years between the self-titled album and Black Gives Way to Blue marks the longest gap between studio albums in Alice in Chains’ career. The band had been working on new material since early 2006,shortly before hiring DuVall as their new singer. By April 2007, Alice in Chains had been writing and demoing songs for the album,]but the band did not show further signs of progress until October 2008, when they announced that they had begun recording with producer Nick Raskulinecz (of Foo Fighters, Stone Sour and Rush fame) in the studio. The writing and recording process was finally finished on March 18, 2009, guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s 43rd birthday.

Take her out, its the weakest song on the album, when they sing "take her out again" it felt bit cheesey

It hurts me to say it but this just proves that there is no such thing as an irreplaceable person. Jerry found the perfect replacement to Layne, used some of Layne's song ideas which he left behind, played some of his own trademark Sabbath-y riffs and the magic happened. Another Alice in Chains masterpiece for us to love.

Facelift was dark and heavy. Dirt was angry and introspective. Tripod was Atmospheric and refined. Jar of Flies was stark and naked, Sap was similar to that. This album is retrospective and depressing, but that's good. Get past the 'loudness war' and it's a natural evolution of the sound. The band isn't the same without Staley, but it's great, nevertheless.

Check My Brain is quite bad (one of AiC's worst tracks), but other than that, a great sludgy album. Indeed better than their self-titled, and maybe even better than Facelift. Major props to Cantrell for pulling this comeback album off so well.

@RonnieLacey Hahaha... What a joke man! Layne will always be the voice of AIC, but anyway Duvall did a great job.

@OutBreakOfEvil2 You shouldn't make ridiculous assumptions like that. I wasnt sure at first if I'd like Will but the more I studied the album i grew to appreciate it. I loved AIC waaaaaaay before DuVall arrived. And if you think thats is the reason i like him, you arent worth having a civilized discussion with

The production is way too loud but this is understandable, we're not living in the 1990's. The important thing is this is one of the best rock albums ever and the proof that AIC are the best thing the 90s gave us and a talented bunch of guys.
