Krautrock is a generic name for the experimental music which appeared in Germany in the late 1960s and gained popularity through the 1970s. The term was originally a humorous one coined by the UK music press (such as New Musical Express and Melody Maker), but the term found an early and enthusiastic underground following. but it *is* german progressive rock. it's just that there's some bands sounding closer to other movements, whether it be psychedelia, experimental rock or electronic/progressive electronic music. krautrock simply became the popular name for this (out of germany...?). i think i prefer kosmische musik a wee bit better though, that avoids the issues around "kraut"
