Stavanger, Norway (1996 – present)

Tristania is a band from Stavanger, Norway, formed in the end of 1996 by Morten Veland (male vocals/guitars), Einar Moen (keyboards), and Kenneth Olsson (drums). Soon thereafter, the band’s original lineup was fleshed out further with the addition of guitarist Anders Hidle, bassist Rune Østerhus (who was recently replaced by Ole Vistnes), and vocalist Vibeke Stene (who has been replaced by Mariangela Demurtas).

The band’s music is usually classified as , due to its strong ties with the genre’s history in addition to the band’s use of styles and traits stereotypical of the genre. However, they pride themselves on their musical diversity, as evidenced by the evolution of their music over the course of their five studio albums.

Tristania’s earlier albums Widow’s Weeds and Beyond the Veil put a lot of focus around classical like female vocals, haunting choruses and classical instruments such as pipe organ, flutes and violins. The leading voice on many of their songs was the menacing harsh vocals of Morten Veland. The atmosphere is also achieved by quite unique sounding guitar effects.
Morten Veland left in 2000 for “musical and social differences” to form the band Sirenia.

With the release of the World of Glass album in 2001, Veland’s growls were replaced by guest vocalist Ronny Thorsen from Trail of Tears, and clean male vocals were provided by veteran guests Østen Bergøy and Jan Barkverd. Despite the new lineup and a slightly changed style that turned off some fans, the album received critical acclaim.

I really wish people would stop promoting their bands on here. That is not what this site was created for. Anyway... kinda rediscovering Tristinia. Its very hard to pull of this kinda of metal without being cheesy and some of their does borderline cheesy in someways, but... for the most part you can't argue about the complexity of the arrangements. Listening to World of Glass right now and man... it does blow away all the crappy metal people are trying to do now days. Recording gear (despite would people would like you to believe) yeah... allows for "louder' recordings, but in regards to warm sonic quality... just can't do what folks were doing just 10 years ago.

Complaining about albums being poppy is always stupid.

People who enjoy Illumination but complain about Mary's albums being too poppy are the worst. Did no one hear how catchy that one was?

Kjetil Nordhus is the best thing about the current Tristania lineup.

@breadysoul, bingo! female-fronted metal fans are so ugh... overly attached. am I the only one in here who thinks Tristania released a few crappy albums with Vibeke? ... I honestly prefer Rubicon over a few albums with Vibeke, of course this is based solely in my opinion, in case someone forgets.

Tristania *was* an actual band, consisting solely of Vibeke and Morten, for the first two albums. Once Morten left it became a solo project.

@breadysoul, you totally nailed it. She could have chosen a better lead vocalist costume from 2007 on, though, it looks awful. :/

Miss Vibeke in the band. Isn't the same, listen to Year Of The Rat the other day and it's not the same Tristania. A bit poppy imo. It's not bad but it's not as awesome as the stuff wae Vibeke. Which was and is top notch! \m/

Dunno what you're talking about. That's obviously Vibeke. She does some excellent harsh vocals. She also played all of the instruments and wrote all the music. Tristania was never actually a band. Those dudes up there in the pictures? They're actually Vibeke dressed up so that she could put forth the illusion that Tristania was a band. In reality, Tristania is/was Vibeke, hence why "they" don't exist anymore.
