Biography

Stavanger, Norway (1996 – present)

Tristania is a band from Stavanger, Norway, formed in the end of 1996 by Morten Veland (male vocals/guitars), Einar Moen (keyboards), and Kenneth Olsson (drums). Soon thereafter, the band’s original lineup was fleshed out further with the addition of guitarist Anders Hidle, bassist Rune Østerhus (who was recently replaced by Ole Vistnes), and vocalist Vibeke Stene (who has been replaced by Mariangela Demurtas).

The band’s music is usually classified as , due to its strong ties with the genre’s history in addition to the band’s use of styles and traits stereotypical of the genre. However, they pride themselves on their musical diversity, as evidenced by the evolution of their music over the course of their five studio albums.

Tristania’s earlier albums Widow’s Weeds and Beyond the Veil put a lot of focus around classical like female vocals, haunting choruses and classical instruments such as pipe organ, flutes and violins. The leading voice on many of their songs was the menacing harsh vocals of Morten Veland. The atmosphere is also achieved by quite unique sounding guitar effects.
Morten Veland left in 2000 for “musical and social differences” to form the band Sirenia.

With the release of the World of Glass album in 2001, Veland’s growls were replaced by guest vocalist Ronny Thorsen from Trail of Tears, and clean male vocals were provided by veteran guests Østen Bergøy and Jan Barkverd. Despite the new lineup and a slightly changed style that turned off some fans, the album received critical acclaim.

v thats because World of Glass and Ashes are great albums in which they covered new grounds with success.Honestly their first mediocre album was Illumination,Vibeke was the only redeeming factor.

OverMadness, well it seems you're a bit more biased. I do understand people's reasons for complaining about Vibeke's departure, though it has gotten a bit obnoxious over the years. Personally, I find that it's not truly Tristania without Morten, but I've only seen a few people point that out.

v There you go. And I was so kind to skip over Sanguine Sky, Down and Lotus, and go directly to that part because health comes first.

Is there a studio version for Libre with Mariangela singing? That 'babylon' part she does live is awesome!

Tristania without Vibeke, is not Tristania [15]

Well, one might like both – I do in Theatre of Tragedy – but from a purely technical viewpoint, well… Liv isn't a trained singer, and while she did fairly well in Theatre of Tragedy, she has gotten considerably worse in recent years, especially sinche she's started attempting an operatic kind of singing, which makes her flaws pop up. I think her "perfect singer" legend has spawned for the lack of considerable terms of comparison in her early days. Nell, on the other hand, is a trained singer, and I've witnessed her quicky rehearse songs in the living room while making dinner, and then giving an astounishing performance with The Crest on songs she hasn't sung in eight years, except for a brief rehearsal session MONTHS prior. She's not perfect either, but she's technically much better prepared than Liv, and that shows in live performances. But as I said, one might enjoy both and there are other subjective things, such as the timbre, when it comes to personal taste. :)

The only fact that could made Nell better than Liv is that she does not need tons of photoshop for looking nice. About the other bands, I still can't understand why they can't accept Kamelot's situation, when Tommy is as great (and even as hot) as Roy Khan... Anyway... Well, this is Tristania's shoutbox xD

lol ur right sir, I just don't agree about Nell "being a much better singer"... I really love her and I have always believed that it was one of the better replacements in a band ever, but for me Liv was (and still is) a perfect singer, and she was specially good for old ToT's music; while Nell was awesome for the fresh style they reached on Storm and Forever is the World, and she even did a fantastic work singing the old material, but in my humble opinion, that does not made her a better singer, both are equally good in their own ways.

vv The world record goes rightfully to the Theatre of Tragedy fans, still complaining after ten years and the band's split up. And since they even got a much better singer, which Tristania didn't, it should count as double.
