Biography

Stavanger, Norway (1996 – present)

Tristania is a band from Stavanger, Norway, formed in the end of 1996 by Morten Veland (male vocals/guitars), Einar Moen (keyboards), and Kenneth Olsson (drums). Soon thereafter, the band’s original lineup was fleshed out further with the addition of guitarist Anders Hidle, bassist Rune Østerhus (who was recently replaced by Ole Vistnes), and vocalist Vibeke Stene (who has been replaced by Mariangela Demurtas).

The band’s music is usually classified as , due to its strong ties with the genre’s history in addition to the band’s use of styles and traits stereotypical of the genre. However, they pride themselves on their musical diversity, as evidenced by the evolution of their music over the course of their five studio albums.

Tristania’s earlier albums Widow’s Weeds and Beyond the Veil put a lot of focus around classical like female vocals, haunting choruses and classical instruments such as pipe organ, flutes and violins. The leading voice on many of their songs was the menacing harsh vocals of Morten Veland. The atmosphere is also achieved by quite unique sounding guitar effects.
Morten Veland left in 2000 for “musical and social differences” to form the band Sirenia.

With the release of the World of Glass album in 2001, Veland’s growls were replaced by guest vocalist Ronny Thorsen from Trail of Tears, and clean male vocals were provided by veteran guests Østen Bergøy and Jan Barkverd. Despite the new lineup and a slightly changed style that turned off some fans, the album received critical acclaim.

Mary sounds really nice on "Number". Overall, judging by the samples she sounds more pleasant than on Rubicon.

The new samples sounds amazing, awesome riffs and vocal lines with feeling, I'm sure that Darkest White will be my album of the year! :)

thanks for the link pedrogomes23 - sounds like this could be an improvement on rubikon (that's maybe not saying much but the darkest white track itself is brilliant) - and thanks for the comments about singing technique DorianVonEden - i think you're spot on even if your fishmonger comment is a bit over the top - she could probably pick up a few hints if she went on american idol :P

(Yeah, really. I do know the type. I used to live in a coastal town near where Mariangela's from, about 30 km from where she attended university. And fishmongers at my hometown's market sound more or less like she does, except without autotuning. You know, shout the most powerful and loud they can to overnoise the crowd. Guess that's why I make that association. That and Mariangela's class.)

vv Alright, whatever. As I said before arguing with you about Mary is pointless. I don't even know why I always feel obligated to defend Mary anyway...(But really, comparing Mariangela to a fishmonger? LOL what exactly does a fishmonger even sound like?)

I wonder what they thought of the pisstania joke?

@ViviAi, I'm not talking about classical training. I'm talking about basic singing training which, unless you're very gifted naturally – which is clearly not the case here –, is essential for anyone who wants to sound like a proper singer instead of a fishmonger at the market. What I'm talking about is not a restriction, is basic technique. It's like handwriting without having learnt how to correctly shape the letters, or speaking a language without knowing the basic grammar: yeah, you can approximately do that, but can you say you're good at it? And would you call it a limitation, anyway? :) Tecnhique does not limit your expressivity (unless you have none to begin with, like in Tarja's case), on the contrary, it helps you express yourself better. :)

Darkest White sounds AWESOME and so do the samples. Despite WE'RE ALL hardcore Vibeke fans and miss her a lot. it's completely stupid to deny the fact that Tristania still great even lacking a classical singer. Anders growls became the new highlight in the band! <3

True true. No Mariangela but the song's riffs are pretty damn fine.
