New album is okay, but not fantastic. Certainly not Chaz's best. I might get crucified for saying this, but I see an odd number thing going on.. 1st and 3rd albums were the best.

New album is a 6/10, not horrible, but just doesn't do it for me. Buffalo and Half Dome were the only semi-standout tracks imho, almost every song sounds the same. Overall, it's too short, forgettable, and disappointing because until now I'd say he got progressively better with each album. It's like he stripped all the funkiness out of Underneath the Pine and added more generic 70s/90s sounding guitar rock and mediocre vocals/lyrics. It's more straightforward, but it just sounds sort of rushed and empty to me. I can only assume he made this stuff because it's easier to play live. Glad I got to see him already on the Anything In Return tour, probably not going to again until he delivers a new album better than this one.

The new album is pleasant but it's no Anything in Return. That's still his high point IMO.

Especially the track 'Spell it Out' is a banger.

I didn't like What For? when I first listened to it, and I understand SleepyDinosaur's remark about his vocals as the centre of attention being cringeworthy. However, after multiple listens I'm actually starting to dig it more and more. Chaz changes his sound with every record he makes, yet you always know it's Chaz. That's amazing, I don't think there are a lot of artists who could pull that off.

I'm an incurable electro-head but it's still easy to sway me with a solid guitar album. Chaz delivers once again.

People don't like this? It's a huge return to form after the sloppy mess that was Anything in Return.

Its really hard to put into words just how disappointing this record is. I've enjoyed Chaz's music for a long, long time and this is just so far off the mark. Its hard to find any redeeming quality in this record. Like, he's had corny lyrics before but it was off set by really good instrumentation. His vocals being front and center are cringe worthy on multiple occasions. The usually spot on production is gone on top of it all, like you can tell he was going for that coarse vintage feel on it and he just missed by a mile. Im really at a loss...

hearkens back to the funky, guitar-driven, harmony-laden sound of Underneath the Pine. certainly a solid effort. growing on me with each listen :)
