Biography

Brooklyn, New York, United States (2005 – 2010)

The Depreciation Guild (2005-2010) was a band from Brooklyn, New York, United States. Recognized as much for their unexpected arrangements as for their unique blend of gauzy guitars and Nintendo Famicom programming, The Depreciation Guild developed somewhat of a cult following in their five years in existence.

Originally a vehicle of songwriter / producer Kurt Feldman, the band’s first recorded output was Nautilus, an EP made available for free download through New York netlabel 8bitpeoples in 2006. After recruiting Akira Hashizume as second guitarist, the group went on to record their first LP, In Her Gentle Jaws, which was released as a free download from their website in December of 2007. This album was self-engineered in New York and mixed by Joshua Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv, Sons Of Magdalene) in Chicago, Illinois. Hashizume left the band in 2007 and was replaced by guitarist Christoph Hochheim. Anton Hochheim joined the band in 2008 as drummer.

In 2009, the trio signed to Kanine Records who released the remainder of their recorded work: two singles, Dream About Me (June 2009) and Blue Lily (September 2010) as well as their second full-length album, Spirit Youth (May 2010) which was also engineered, mixed and produced by Joshua Eustis. A limited edition vinyl reissue of the now deleted In Her Gentle Jaws album was released in 2009 as well.

Dat feel when you've forgotten about DG for a while and then you hear em and it's spring. [2] 6 years later and the sound is still fresh

Btw, a group of Guild fans are looking for anyone with the demo versions of Through the Snow, White Moth, and Kimi Ni Mune Kyun! If you have any, please inbox me! I actually used to have them but they've since disappeared off of the face of the earth! Lets keep the obscure tracks out there! :D

Also Inuzini, color me five shades of jealous. That must have been otherworldly.

Hey Guildmembers (I totally propose that as the name for DG fans), Christoph is releasing his debut solo EP as Ablebody on January 29th. You can listen to one of the tracks right here — Anton also plays drums on it, so there's half of the Guild right there! The accompanying article says it will be self-released, so I'd imagine checking in here or here will get you to it come release day. If it's anywhere near as good as Kurt's Afar, it's going to be pretty darn excellent.

Aww, no new Ice Choir music next year. I suppose there was a gap between IHGJ and SY too, huh.

Very true, Joshoewaa! Dang, now I'm excited for the next Ice Choir record and I'm sure that's gonna be a pretty long wait. And hey, what's going on here, are more people discovering the Depreciation Guild? We gotta keep spreading the DG gospel.

You'd be hard done by to find an artist who thinks their first album is their best, even if it is their best. Can't think of one artist off the top of my head who's said their first is their favourite... It's the same for any medium, I make films and loads of people love my earlier work, but I don't. I guess you just get used to doing what you're doing, you want to push yourself further away from what you've already done, even if you don't really realise you're doing that. Natural evolution I guess. Interested to see what the next Ice Choir album will sound like, but I would assume it'll still very much retain that mega 80's vibe, but I agree, would love to see something more 90's dreampop inspired, much like what Spirit Youth tapped into.

I don't know, but it is pretty heartbreaking. I guess it's just a natural tendency for artists to reject their older work if they feel they've improved over it.

i wonder what's gone on with kurt to make him so animatedly anti-DPG these days :/ it's disheartening. there's so much artistic wealth in the songs he now despises.

That's a good point. I hope your right tbh, as I will always be on the DG-side of the fence, though the songs are excellent as always. I would love to see him turning up the dream pop influences a bit more on the next record (Cocteau Twins, Pale Saints, etc).. I know Kurt disapproves of pure shoegaze these days, but at the very least we can hope for something that's more dreamy.

I'm really wondering how the next album will sound, since it always seems like Kurt's reinventing his musical style with each new release. I'm hoping there'll be more guitar and fretless bass on the next one, it sounds like the other members of Ice Choir weren't really in on the whole recording process. Not to mention the synthesizer stuff is great and all but I don't know how successfully he's going to be able to keep churning out records that sound 90% like they're straight out of 1985. I can't help but think there's going to be some sort of stylistic shift like there was between IHGJ and SY.
