Boston, United States (2005 – present)

The Dear Hunter is the full-time project of Casey Crescenzo, formerly of band The Receiving End of Sirens. The band got its name from the lead character of the story that he wrote to go along with the music. The sound is unlike that of Casey’s former band, with more and tendencies and a wider variety of instrumentation.

The band began as a side project of Casey Crescenzo when he was full time member of the Boston, Massachusetts band The Receiving End of Sirens. It was originally intended as a vehicle for music Casey had written that didn’t fit with the heavier sound of The Receiving End of Sirens. In the winter of 2005 Casey recorded the Dear Ms. Leading demos. He created 10 copies of the demos on burned CDs intended for the ears of friends, and they began circulation. At the time he did not plan to pursue The Dear Hunter full time and allowed the demos to be placed online for download. On February 2, 2006, The Dear Hunter played its first show with The Receiving End of Sirens as the backing band.

In May 2006, Casey left The Receiving End of Sirens and began work on The Dear Hunter’s first studio album. He expanded the scope of the project to a six-album story set at the dawn of the 20th century about the birth, life, and abrupt death of a boy, known only in the story as “The Dear Hunter.” In a 2007 interview with music website Absolutepunk.

Did I miss something? Genres are always contested. They become opinions, thus people debate how they're used (especially for "emo" as its seen negatively), but in their original inception they usually meant something solid. That's all I wanted to say, really.

The Dear Hunter are like Manchester Orchestra; great on the albums, but in their shows they either don't play their good songs, they play their songs in a way that they ruin the songs for me, or they just blow. ]:

I'm taking my comment back for fear of feeding the hype machine. Going to do a bit of research before I shoot off from the mouth, again -- they were pretty loud, and I am known to be an idiot. Could have entirely been my bad.

It could have been off of the Dear Ms. Leading demos or from the random ep.

Valid counterpoint, no doubt. I definitely get where you're coming from, but I still think "emo(tional)" is a label that encompasses far too much music to be remotely accurate. The genre / sound would really be better off with a new term. That said, I'll meet everyone halfway and say that TDH can Do "emo". I can see someone pigeonholing Red Hands or Black Sandy Beaches as emo [albeit amazing] tracks. But to label the whole band in such a manner? The same guys who produce the toe-tapping goodness that is The Oracles on the Delphi Express and In Cauda Venenum? Just doesn't sit right with me. I've heard The Dear Hunter labeled as a lot of things - and whether I'd agree or disagree with said labels is aside the point - but Emo definitely shouldn't be one. It's a component of their sound, if anything. This is solely my opinion.

That is a logical argument, but the "emo" genre has solid rooting. At some point, post-hardcore/punk hardcore spawned emotional hardcore (or whatever one would call it), which focused on more sensitive lyrics than other similar acts and sought out some melodic sentiments. The sound was adopted by many different alternative and indie bands, thus now does not hold its original meaning. Like anything else that gains mainstream appeal, its now adopted as an insult... I personally can see why people would call The Dear Hunter "emo", but I agree that they are not emo. However, there is emo influence in the music. The sound that "emo" introduced to music can be found almost everywhere now. I personally think its a good thing too, its influenced some great artists.

Emo is short for emotional, I'm fairly certain. And last time I checked, pretty much all music has emotion in some form or another. Be it emotion put into the music, or emotions stirred from said music. Either way: pretty much every song in the world is "emo". Far outdated debate / label.

"It was a dream come true to be able to open for this band!!!" -Made me think about how far this band has come, i first saw them when everyone standing outside the ballroom/tavern didnt have a clue who the opening band was. which of course was the dear hunter, and to this day, it was probably one of the best performances ive seen.

Act 2 is rapidly convincing me that this band should be huge. I think I shall now have to order Act 1 too =D
