About This Track

The title Martha My Dear was inspired by McCartney’s Old English Sheepdog, also named Martha. McCartney has said that the song itself is probably about his longtime love interest Jane Asher. Asher broke off their engagement in mid-1968. McCartney chides her with the lyrics in the song “…when you find yourself in the thick of it, help yourself to a bit of what is all around you… ” Asher inspired many of McCartney’s songs, including “Here, There, and Everywhere”, “For No One” and “We Can Work It Out”. (A later Martha lyric explains, “You have always been my inspiration…” McCartney has also said, cryptically, that the song is about his “muse”—the voice in his head that tells him what words and music to write.)

This is one of the best Beatles songs.... you can hear proto-disco and a lot of today`s indie pop in this. Also all of ELO.

I love the production on this stereo version of this track. Only the Beatles can pull off 40 seconds of an empty right channel. The instruments come in so perfectly every time, and Paul carries the melody well.

Better than I remembered. One of Paul's corny songs that is really quite good. In fact, I'm kind of a fan of that Beatles sub-genre.

Crazy inventive production on this song. Every verse, chorus, whatever has a totally different approach but it doesn't sound at all forced or over-done. Like they use clipped guitar or a hand-clap to completely and instantly change mood. It's incredible.

Possibly my favorite track from the album, if it's really even possible at all to have just one favorite.
