There have been at least two bands named ‘The Avalanches’:
1. An Australian plunderphonics collective
2. A defunct American surf rock group
1. The Avalanches are an electronic/plunderphonics music collective from Melbourne, Australia. They are well known for their use of eclectic sampling, creating their debut album, 2000’s “Since I Left You”, entirely out of over 3,500 samples of obscure records, movies, and television shows. This is famously demonstrated on their hit single “Frontier Psychiatrist”.
Before this, they were a hip-hop group with the single album Rock City and the Extended Play El Producto.
Currently The Avalanches are appearing at outdoor festival events with a DJ set, and are still reported working on new material.

I reaaaaally hope that they drop an album this year. They've been hinting at a new album for a while now, and they keep changing their MySpace title to things like "clearing samples" and "putting on the finishing touches." It's been too long since their last LP, and I'll be really disappointed if I don't get to hear something from them soon.
