The Angels of Light is a musical entity formed in 1997 by singer Michael Gira after he disbanded Swans, the group he'd founded in 1982. The band has marked a distinctly different style for Gira since he left Swans, most noticeably being musically more melodic and less brutal than his previous efforts, though no less emotionally draining.

  • If you love Angels of Light, make sure you also look up the M. Gira / D. Matz record What We Did. It was released a few months after How I Loved You, but (like every Angels release) it already feels different and new, a progressively-minded stepping stone on the way to Everything Is Good Here/Please Come Home. Is/Was, had it been an Angels of Light song, would likely have counted among their best. This is a beautiful, low-key yet ambitious little album. Get it!

  • When I heard his voice on How I Loved You for the first time, it was a bit strange. But after a while I realised how refreshing it sounded.
