Rugby, Warwickshire (1984 – 1991)

Spacemen 3 were an English neo-psychedelic/ band formed in 1984 in Rugby, Warwickshire by Jason Pierce (aka J Spaceman) and Peter Kember (aka Sonic Boom). Their first album, Sound of Confusion (1986), was not successful commercially, but it attracted a loyal fanbase. Its follow-up, 1987’s Perfect Prescription, is a concept album mirroring the highs and lows of a drug trip. It expanded the group’s core of fans and is generally considered their masterpiece.

Playing With Fire (1989) expanded on the and themes of the earlier albums; its second single, “Revolution,” reached #1 on the UK charts. But soon after, a combination of personnel changes, drug problems and inttraband tension (especially between Kember and Pierce) began to break the band apart. Recurring, released in 1991, was their last proper album, though its recording reflected the split between Pierce and Kember as each recorded their own side of the album in different studios, with a cover of Mudhoney’s ‘When Tomorrow Hits’ to separate them (Mudhoney would later return the favour with a cover of Spacemen 3’s ‘Revolution’). It was their most popular record, but by its release Kember and Pierce had already formed new bands, Spectrum, were self described “ experimentation” and Spiritualized, respectively. The final conflict that contributed to the split was Pierce’s decision to release a cover of The Troggs’ ‘Any Way That You Want Me’, as the first Spiritualized single, which Kember had been wanting to cover for years.

Good on them, I don't want them to reform. It's rather boring having a bunch of old farts get together and play tunes that will sound nothing like classic S3. You know, kind of like when VU got back together?

Don't care much for band reunions really but kiss and make up as friends before its too late, ffs. If Kember is telling the truth about having sent notes to Pierce and whatever without ever hearing anything back...I read somewhere that Kember went to see Spiritualized live in LA a few years back without being able to talk to Spaceman. That's literally HEARTBREAKING (if it's true). I know Kember appears to a dickhead and he probably hurt Pierces feelings pretty bad more than once but even so. Jason Pierce is one of my musical GODS but goddamnit grow up and be the bigger person already. Sorry shoutbox for being emotional :)

I never listened to very much of these guys despite the songs I enjoyed, but god damn do they have a lot of great covers from great bands. I didn't notice it until I started looking at track listings. If there's anything else these guys do right besides their original music, it's pick their influences.
