Biography

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (1991 – present)

Sloan is an band which formed in 1991 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and currently based in Toronto, Ontario. Since its formation, the band has consisted of Jay Ferguson (vocals, guitar), Patrick Pentland (guitar, vocals), Chris Murphy (vocals, bass) and Andrew Scott (drums, vocals). The band has released eleven studio albums since their formation, the most recent being “Commonwealth” released on September 9, 2014.

The band was formed in 1991 when Chris Murphy and Andrew Scott met at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in Halifax; Patrick Pentland and Jay Ferguson joined soon after. In 1992 the band created their own record label, Murderecords, for themselves and other Halifax area bands, and released the Peppermint EP.

According to Sloan’s official website, the band’s name refers to a friend’s nickname. Their friend Jason Larsen was called Slow One by his French-speaking boss, which with the French accent sounded more like Sloan. The original agreement was that they could name the band after their friend’s nickname as long as he was on the cover of their first album. As a result, it is Larsen who appears on the cover of the Peppermint EP.

Later in 1992 Sloan released their full-length album Smeared on Geffen Records. In 1994 Geffen did not promote their second album, Twice Removed, due to artistic disputes, although it sold well in Canada.

I'm only listening to this cover of "Fountains" for the rest of my life starting now. Farewell, all other music on earth.

Chris Murphy's contributions to Never Hear The End Of It are phenominal. All four were great on that album, but Murphy especially shines.

One more message (shout) - It elates me to see how many people can rank every one of their albums because we take the time as fans to listen to all of their albums. Sloan rules!

Kaylinbee - Hard to argue with your list, I might move one or two around but it's close. Here is mine reposted and slightly edited. Never Hear The End Of It, Twice Removed (the tour they just did playing this album in its entirety is the best show I've been to), Between The Bridges, One Chord To Another, The Double Cross, Navy Blues, Parallel Play, Pretty Together, Smeared (Underwhelmed is a classic!), Action Pact (the only subpar album they have in my opinion, and even this one has a great Chris Murphy track (Nothing Lasts Forever Anymore). I hope all Sloan fans post their choices.

Wooleybooley - You will learn to love the first half as well. I agree the 2nd half is amazing but the first half has some gems too. The NS is great and Sensory Deprivation is a staple of their live shows. Glad you came around on it, it's my 3rd favorite album of theirs.

I love all the album rankings but putting Parallel Play above Twice Removed is ridiculous.

"Between The Bridges" was the one Sloan album I just never connected with. ..... but now it's grown on me immensely. The key to it was starting with track 7: A Long Time Coming. The back half of this album is loaded with great tunes!

After many months of deliberation, I'm finally ready to do this thing no one's doing anymore: One Chord To Another, Navy Blues, The Double Cross, Twice Removed, Never Hear The End Of It, Between the Bridges, Action Pact, Pretty Together, Parallel Play, Smeared.

They're coming to my city for the Twice Removed tour. I can't believe it... I get to see one of my favourite bands play one of my favourite records? Awesome.

Been listening to this band forever, but "Parallel Pact" is my favorite. I don't get why people don't rock that album more. "Witch's Wand" ... "I'm Not a Kid Anymore" ... "All I Am is All You're Not"? Three of the best indie rock songs ever recorded.
