Chicago, United States (2001 – present)

Rising from the ashes of the band Tusk, the instrumental outfit Pelican formed in Chicago, 2001, by guitarists Trevor de Brauw and Laurent Lebec with sibling rhythm section Larry Herweg and Bryan Herweg (drums and bass, respectively).

Owing a great debt to pioneering forefathers Neurosis, and often compared to Boston’s Isis, and Sweden’s Cult of Luna, Pelican were initially signed to Hydra Head Records (whose head, Aaron Turner, is a member of Isis).

After making their debut with an eponymous self-titled four-song EP “Pelican” in 2003, Pelican expanded their sound with 2004’s critically acclaimed “Australasia”. In 2005 Pelican released the “March Into the Sea” EP (featuring the original 20 minutes version), followed by, arguably, their most accomplished record to date, “The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw”. “City Of Echoes” was released June 5th, 2007.

In 2009 the band signed with Southern Lord Records in preparation for the release of their fourth full album.

I have always had problems with metal, i hate the growls, i find the lyrics embarrassing and juvenile, the whole metal culture too damn silly. Pelican is perfect, Australasia is one of my favorite albums of all time, it's such an hypnotic record, i love those riffs!!! ,They don't sing silly songs about the devil or porn or depression, in general, this band is AWESOME.

Final Breath vocally reminds me of the end of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, with that Kiss cover of God Gave Rock and Roll to You. But in a good way...

This is an attempt to get some deserving bands a little more recognition. The following are my 100 favorite instrumental rock and fusion albums ranked in order. I considered EPs equal to albums and about five albums have a small amount of lyrics. 1. pelican- what we all come to need pelican- city of echoes pelican- the fire in our throats will beckon the thaw russian circles- enter red sparowes- every red heart shines toward the red sun zebulon pike- intransience the hosemobile- what can and can't go on russian circles- station russian circles- geneva zebulon pike- zebulon pike 2: the deafening twilight

"i don't see why some pelican fans don't recognize how great COE is though." --> Indeed! Final breath is the "worst" song on the new Album. But the new Album is great. "The Creeper", Ephemeral, the titele track.. So great. :)

WWACTN>COE>FIOTWBTT>the other two the new album is great. i don't see why some pelican fans don't recognize how great COE is though. also, only a crack smoker , imo, could think "final breath" is the best song off the album. the instrumental tunes on the album are all far superior to "final breath". on final breath there's monotone somewhat groaning vocals and one simple riff without any of the beautifully complex guitar leads found on the instru tunes. hopefully pelican won't go on the decline in the future by adding vocals to songs. sorry for the rant.

I find Pelican's music more thought provoking than the music of Isis- that isn't a criticism of Isis.
