Sweden (1994 – 1999, 2009 – present)

October Tide is a melodic band founded in Stockholm, Sweden in 1994 by Jonas Renkse and Fredrik Norrman (of Katatonia). They released two full-length albums: Rain Without End (recorded in 1995, yet released only in 1997 on Vic Records) and Grey Dawn (1999, originally on Avantgarde, re-issued in 2007 via Peaceville) before disbanding because their “inspiration ran dry” and because Renkse & Norrman decided to fully concentrate on Katatonia instead.

In late 2009 however, despite staunchly refusing the notion of future material for an astounding 11 years, Fred Norrman announced he was leaving Katatonia and had reformed October Tide. Joining him were Tobias Netzell (of In Mourning) on vocals, Robin Bergh on drums and Jonas Kjellgren as a session bassist (for album recordings only). Original co-member Jonas Renkse was no longer participating in October Tide. A brand new full-length album entitled A Thin Shell was released in the autumn of 2010. Meanwhile Emil Alstermark (guitar) and Pierre Stam (of In Mourning, bass) have joined the band on a permanent basis.

Rain Without End line-up:
Jonas Renkse - vocals, drums, guitars (also in Katatonia (Swe), Bloodbath (Swe))
Fredrik Norrman - guitars, bass (also in Uncanny (Swe), Katatonia (Swe), Fulmination, Bloodbath (Swe))

Grey Dawn line-up:
Mårten Hansen - vocals (also in Votur, A Canorous Quintet, Sins Of Omission)

I don't understand why they didn't release it as Katatonia. [2]

so rain without end is a more melodic Dance of December Souls with deeper vocals ? it kind of sounds Opethy too. I don't understand why they didn't release it as Katatonia .

A Thin Shell was got a little too nu-Katatonia (first song and last song are the best, I'd say), I like Tunnel better, but not by all that much. Rain Without End was my favorite, but Grey Dawn has slowly surpassed it for me.

All their albums are definitely worth listening to, but A Thin Shell is their weakest in my opinion but still not a bad record by any means. Rain Without End will always be their best, if they top it I'll seriously be shocked. Grey Dawn is wicked as well but I've actually grown more fond of Tunnel of No Light.

I think all their albums are fantastic. If I needed to make a Best-Of, I would probably take four tracks from four albums and an ultimate compilation would be done.

Rain Without End still sounds as good as it did when I first heard it roughly 10 or 11 years ago. A truly timeless album.

Tunnel of no Light is a good album, i found it bleaker production wise than the other's, less dynamic, reminded me of a Murderous Circus

Why are people saying the last album sucks? No-one is giving reasons they dislike it.
