It was announced during an interview with Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 after the premiere of “Mariners Apartment Complex,” its lead single, on September 12, 2018. The following week, Del Rey released the second single "Venice Bitch" and revealed the album name on September 18 in a conversation with Zane Lowe. Subsequent singles, "hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have – but I have it" and "Doin' Time" were released in 2019.
