Biography

Akiko Yoshida is a Japanese singer-songwriter, who performs under the stage name Kokia (stylised as KOKIA, an anagram of Akiko), and sings with a wide radius of musical influences.

She is best known for her songs “Arigatō…” (Thank You?) (which reached #1 in Hong Kong when it was covered by Sammi Cheng) and “The Power of Smile.” She is also recognised for her numerous contributions to anime/game soundtracks, the most notable being “Ai no Melody/Chōwa Oto (With Reflection)” for the film Origin: Spirits of the Past, “Follow the Nightingale” for the game Tales of Innocence and “Tatta Hitotsu no Omoi” for the anime Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino. Kokia often performs in Europe, basing her activities in Paris and releasing music through Wasabi Records, a subsidiary of Kazé.

Early life, Pony Canyon debut

Kokia was born on July 22, 1976, and raised by her mother. She started playing the violin when she was two and a half years old, but preferred the family piano. Often instead of playing with toys, Kokia played with the family piano. Kokia remembers putting picture books on the music stand and creating music that represented the scenes.

When Kokia was 10, she went abroad to America with her sister Kyoko to study at the Summer music school (and did so again when she was 14). In high school, she studied in vocal music and opera, later majoring in opera at the Toho Gakuen School of Music.

While at university, a friend gave a demo tape Kokia had recorded to a record executive. Kokia was then signed to Pony Canyon, and debuted in 1998 while still at university.

Yeah...back to reality, I love the "Where to go my love? (single vers.)". It reminds me of "Infinity", one of my favorite KOKIA ballads because of how touching it is. The piano version is equally as good.

Dulukk gets sensitive over an artist on the other side of the world. Just listen to your visual kei bands and stop getting mad...

Dulukk, If you want to make such a wildly unpopular statement, then you would best benefit with some evidence or an example...

two things kokia thoroughly enjoys: money and copying other artists.

記憶の光, probably one of her best collabs ever. Do you agree? BUT, If I had to choose between Kioku no Hikari and KARMA, I couldn't tell... I do love KARMA. can I just adore both of them??? (Btw, I also like Battle of Destiny, @Dreamskipper & I agree) As for the album WTGML, really slow and homogeneous. however, there are some songs that got my attention: where to go my love piano version is such a beautiful ballad. you are not alone and Yume to Tochu are nice too. Ai wa kodamasuru, I got used to the live version.... but, given the circumstances, it's just superb she managed to pull off an album. AND, what do you gotta say about the Strike Suit Zero collab? HEAVENLY.

OMG, 記憶の光 is such a great KOKIA classic, reminds me a lot of her older soundtrack works. It's pure genius!

記憶の光 is SO GOOD. Better than "Battle of Destiny" by a long shot. I wish she'd do another "pieces" type album (though I guess that was just really a best of), since her anime work is unparalleled and in a realm of its own.

"where to go my love?" reminds me so much of "moment" and I LOVED "moment", so I naturally love WTGML.

''I could do with some non-ballad song in the new album,Kokia :/ Just for some variety...I'm so disappointed :('', ye this. Basically no variety in this album (which was also the case on Moment). I mean, the balads are not bad, but after one, im allready tired. And basically all songs are so incredible slow paced. And always emphasis on vocals, instead of instruments. Why no instrumental interludes etc? They are really hard to find in this album. Oh, piano almost everywhere. Again. Its not as overused as Moment, but still...

She hasn't included a single on a studio album since 2007's "Follow the Nightingale" if I'm not mistaken. But hey, that gives us another reason to purchase the "best of" albums or the singles!

I didn't understand why Battle of Destiny isn't on the new album.

I actually really like the album too, though it's essentially just a better version of Moment (meaning it has the potential to get boring to some). It's really peaceful and has a beautiful theme.
