Iron Butterfly is an American band, well known for their 1968 hit “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”. They are considered a very-early band as a result of this song and others like it as well as the title of their debut album, ‘Heavy’. Their heyday was the late-, but the band has been reincarnated several times with various members. Also known for being the first RIAA certified platinum group, VH1 ranks them as number 19 on their list of top 100 “”.

The band was formed in 1966 in San Diego, and they released their aforementioned debut album, ‘Heavy’, in 1968, after signing a deal with an Atlantic Records subsidiary called ATCO. The original members were Doug Ingle (vocals, keyboards), Jack Pinney (drums), Greg Willis (bass), and Danny Weis (guitar). They were soon joined by frontman Darryl DeLoach.

Jerry “The Bear” Penrod and Bruce Morris replaced Willis and Pinney after the band relocated to Los Angeles, California in 1966, and Ron Bushy then came aboard when Morris’ tenure proved to be a short one. All but Ingle and Bushy left the band after recording the first album in late 1967; the remaining musicians, faced with the possibility of the record not being released, quickly found replacements in bassist Lee Dorman and guitarist Erik Brann (aka Erik Braunn) and resumed touring.

Check out their blues rock song: Stone Believer - Single Version long with Easy Rider - two great songs! <3

Great underrated band. They are very early heavy metal - yet I know some that will argue otherwise. Really depends on which of their songs you listen too - not all of them are early heavy metal nor proto-metal but a amount of their music falls into one of the two categories (heavy metal or proto-metal).

Their first three albums really are amongst the best psychedelic albums ever... the next three ones aren't anywhere near that level unfortunately. There are some progressive gems in "Sun and steel" though.

I was aware of them for years, but never got around to listening to them. It's quite something that I got into them this year. A super fun band!

Не согласен с предыдущим. Одна из самых недооценённых групп того времени.

вторичная хипповая самодеятельность, но крепкие песни есть, общего снисходительного ощущения к этой группе не понимаю.

Most of their songs can beat the shit out of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida anyday.

One of the best bands from 60s, just genius and underrated as a fuck. I don't understand why.
