Wauchope, New South Wales, Australia (1977 – present)

Australian band Icehouse was formed in 1977, initially called ‘Flowers’, by Iva Davies (born Ivor Arthur Davies, on 22 May 1955, in Wauchope, New South Wales, Australia). Inspired by and , Davies was the main creative force behind the band, being a classically trained musician. Band member Keith Welsh joined him on bass. For a number of years they also obtained the services of Bob Kretschmer, until he was replaced by young guitarist Paul Gildea.

Since 1980, Icehouse has released seven albums, several compilations, and music from collaborations with other artists including dance companies. Their 1987 album ‘Man of Colours’ was released at the apex of their fame and international success. It is considered by many to be the band’s magnum opus.

As ‘Flowers’, Icehouse built up a strong following as a live act around Sydney, Australia, noted for their distinctive cover versions of songs by a wide range of acts including T-Rex and Brian Eno. After signing to the independent Regular Festival Records label, they released their debut single, “Can’t Help Myself”, which hit the Australian Top 10 in June 1980. This was followed by their first album ‘Icehouse’, which also made the Top 10 and became one of year’s biggest selling albums in Australia. The album made use of synthesisers, especially the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5.

"Great Southern Land" is their greatest song, imo. When i heard it first time, I wondered, who's sing that song? Later i find out, that's Icehouse.

Devil lives inside the icehouse... At least that's what the old ones say... They say, he came a long time ago... He came here with the winter snow... Now it's colder every day

Since my last post, the bulk of the Icehouse albums have been added oto U.S. itunes, along with some nice trimmings (remixes and b-sides). At the moment I'm digging the single version of "Dusty Pages," a nice enhancement of the album version.

This has to be the most successful, well-regarded band whose entire back catalog is out of print, save for one album on iTunes (not counting the White Heat collection). I've managed to get Man of Colours, Measure for Measure and Sidewalk, but I've been trying to snag a copy of Primitive Man for less than $25 or $30 for ages.
