Biography

Sint-Niklaas, Belgium (1995 – present)

Hooverphonic is a Belgian / group formed in 1995. Though initially placed in the genre, they quickly expanded their sound to the point where they could no longer be classified so easily. The band originally called themselves Hoover but later changed their name to Hooverphonic due to other groups using the Hoover name.

The band achieved international recognition through the inclusion of the track 2Wicky (from A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular) on the to Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1996 film Stealing Beauty (Io Ballo da Sola).

The original members of the group were vocalist Liesje Sadonius, keyboardist Frank Duchêne, bass guitarist and programmer Alex Callier, and guitarist Raymond Geerts. Sadonius left Hooverphonic on amicable terms shortly after the release of A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular and was replaced by Geike Arnaert in early 1998. Duchêne left the band after Blue Wonder Power Milk. Arnaert left the band in 2008 and was succeeded by Noémie Wolfs.

Hooverphonic released their fifth studio album No More Sweet Music in November 2005, featuring four singles: Wake Up, You Hurt Me, Dirty Lenses and We All Float. One year later they released a Best Of album called Singles 96-06. This was their last release under the Sony label.

Hooverphonic released their latest album The President Of The LSD Golf Club on 8th October 2007 in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium and Holland, which includes the single Expedition Impossible. European Release January 2008 (although available via mail-order). This was an independent release, recorded at the Willie Nelson studios in the USA.

If you're after more trip-hop that sounds like Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky... it's right here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5_eGA1ztGc

@Ambroos, Yup, I sometimes miss Geike's vocals, but Noemie put new life in some of the old tracks. She took Renaissance Affair, my favorite track, to a whole new level (Hooverphonic with Orchestra version is just stunning). Same goes for Jackie Cane and other tracks. The only old track where she sounds off to me is Eden. I can only hope that they'll make some more trip-hop albums. Last one wasn't bad, but it had this awful indie-rock feel.

Yeah I really don't like Hooverphonic with Noémie. Whenever I rediscover my old Hooverphonic albums (anything before Noémie basically) I'm surprised again and again how brilliant Liesje and Geike's vocals were. They went deep, they were dark, they were mysterious. I saw them live a few weeks back and was simply bored even the old songs lost their charm by now in their new versions sung by Noémie as I just feel she doesn't get them. Can't wait for new work from Geike...

eh? man i just think that its great that they changed their name to 'avoid legal issues with a vacuum cleaner company'

@tetragrammaton- in the same text which you have quoted is written that Hooverphonic is a band formed in 1995. The fact that they changed the name doesn't mean that they're formed a new band.

Time to get over the Geike period. Noemie deserves all credits with the latest album. Her personality is also much more suited for performing on stage. Amalfi is a strong album!

I don't understand why you guys think that Hooverphonic exists since 1998, because in my opinion their best album is A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular from 1996. Geike as the only right Hooverphonic singer? Are you guys her fanatics or something like that?
