Flake Music was a band from Albuquerque, United States led by James Mercer before he dropped the project in favor of his side-band, The Shins. In fact, James brought along the entire band with him and they formed under their new name.

They released one album "When You Land Here, It's Time To Return".

  • the reissue is great..even though there are definitely new overdubs and what not going on a couple tracks.
  • Okay, so I'm not crazy. There are definitely new overdubs on the "remixed/remastered" versions, right? I swear, James Mercer is the George Lucas of indie rock.
  • Woah - THIS! Fuzzed out Shins channeling Built to Spill/Apples In Stereo/Guided By Voices? Sign me up. "Blast Valve" and "Deluca" are righteous jams.
  • So pleased with the remaster, obviously we will always have the old one @Mfinstatos, but I'm so glad with how the new is sounding, added vocals on Mieke are lovely. Only gripe is with the terrible new track titles that replace the 'Untitled'. 'Faded Polaroids' hahaha
  • I prefer the original to the remaster, it lost that lo-fi charm it had. They added new vocal tracks on the remaster from what it seems.
  • Really looking forward to the remastered album. I love this album and it will be interesting to see if it loses or gains any magic in the process. As much as I love lo-fi, the drums always sounded so terribly muffled.
  • I asked one of the guys from the Shins back in 2004 whether they ever play Flake Music at shows, and he said occasionally during sound checks but that was it.
  • Way better than Shins.
  • This has probably been asked a bunch of times, but do The Shins play any of these songs at their shows? I'm with everyone here and like Flake Music better.
  • prefer this over the shins
