On 16 November 2021, “Time Escaping” was released alongside the announcement of Big Thief’s fifth album "Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You". The song was first debuted live on 17 February 2020 at Lisboa ao Vivo in Lisbon, Portugal and was later recorded for the album in October 2020 at Five Star Studios in Los Angeles, CA.

"We kinda had this groove that felt good on the drums and we were searching for guitar sounds and we kept wanting to get the guitars to be drier so there was more space cause there’s a lot of words. We wanted to kinda feel the funkiness in Buck and Adrianne’s fingers so we ended up putting these little metro cards or business cards or just stuff from your wallet in the guitar to sort of deaden it and it brings out different harmonics because it’s changing the distance between frets on the string and it gives it that percussive, really short attack sound and so that’s how this song was tracked. It was tracked with Buck and Adrianne in the same room playing these prepared acoustic guitars and Adrianne doing her vocal and Max on the synth doing that sort of arpeggiated thing just playing that by hand and me on drums."
