New York City, United States (1979 – present)

Beastie Boys are an American trio from New York City, United States: Brooklyn and Manhattan. The members are Mike D (real name Michael Diamond), Adrock (Adam Horovitz) and, until his death in May 2012, MCA (Adam Yauch).

The Beastie Boys were the first successful white rap group and one of the few acts from the early days of hip-hop that still enjoy major success. Their rock and punk-influenced rap has had a significant impact on artists both in and outside the hip-hop scene, and they were the first rap group to gain a substantial following with fans.

The Beastie Boys came together in 1979 as a punk band called The Young Aboriginies. In 1981 MCA joined the group and from the suggestion of their guitarist John Berry, they changed their name to Beastie Boys. Their line up then consisted of Adam Yauch (aka MCA) on bass, drummer Kate Schellenbach (later of Luscious Jackson), guitarist John Berry (of Big Fat Love), and Mike Diamond (aka Mike D) on the mic. Beastie Boys’ debut EP, the Pollywog Stew vinyl 7” was released in 1982.

The band’s first foray into hip hop, the Cooky Puss 12”, followed in 1983, with The Young and the Useless guitarist Adam Horovitz (aka Adrock) replacing John Berry. “Cooky Puss” would be the first B Boys record to receive play at NYC clubs like Danceteria as the band played its first shows outside the city.

The Mike D/MCA/Adrock Beastie Boys lineup debuted in 1984 with the “Rock Hard”/”Beastie Groove” 12.” Produced by Rick Rubin, who went on to produce albums for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash and Audioslave. The “She’s On It”/ “Slow And Low” 12” followed in 1985 and Beastie Boys went on Madonna’s “Virgin Tour.” as her opening act.

I bit agree with Liam Howlett. Although Ad-Rock and Mike D are my fav MC's, MCA was the voice that always made me recognize a Beastie Boys tune.

"Respect to the MCA. Iv been listening to all the beasties records this last week and found myself reflecting and wanting to send my respect to the MCA , His voice was a big part of my youth and his band one of the inspirations for our band . From license to ill inside cover which i drew in my school art exam through to all their beats and rhymes .people already know the beasties prod reading story , but when something has been such an important part of ur musical life u dont forget or really lose the respect. Its his voice (and many people have said) that was the great twist in the mix of his band . Im sad i wont hear that again and just want to send my own respect out there to the man . U for real". @Kelemvor - uh, that's why I love it - at the end of the day, it's all hip-hop, and the boys proved capable of good flow, not just experimental bad-ass shit.
