New York City (2002 – present)

Battles is an American band that formed in New York City in 2002. The group is composed of drummer John Stanier (of Tomahawk and formerly of Helmet), guitarist/keyboardist Ian Williams (formerly of Don Caballero and Storm & Stress), guitarist Dave Konopka (formerly of Lynx), and, until August 2010, guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Tyondai Braxton (son of Avantgarde Jazz musician Anthony Braxton).

Battles released three EPs in 2004, each on a different record label (Cold Sweat, Monitor and Dim Mak). These were rereleased on the influential Warp label in 2006. Preceded by the Atlas EP ( “single of the week” in NME), and with hype building, the LP Mirrored was released on the 14 May 2007 to widespread critical acclaim.

Among the many positive reviews, the album received a score of 9.1 in a Pitchfork Media review and a glowing write up in the UK’s Clash Magazine, where comparisons were made to Glitter Beat. The band scored its first UK cover feature in May 2007, talking to Plan B Magazine about the making of Mirrored.

Drummer John Stanier’s yellow Tama drum kit is defined by an extremely high Zildjian K ride cymbal. He believes the ride cymbal is overused in drumming, so he wanted to make it more of an effort to play it. He has to jump up from his drum seat to hit it during live performances.

No use arguing over which album is better, they're both amazing. Now what we need is a new one. I expect another one in 2015, to continue the tradition of four years of painfully waiting.

The EPs are still the best material, followed by Mirrored, but Gloss Drop is not nearly as bad as I initially thought. Have really been enjoying it this week. Great sunshine music.

@BertEngle wow u are being pretty hard on the other dudes in Battles, what did they do to you? Plus, it's pretty widely known that Tyondai left Battles because he realized he had to follow the Braxton career path of going solo once your band achieves a modicum of success

Still doesn't compare to heyday Battles live performances but at least the man's moving on and exploring new things as opposed to his former bandmates who have kinda just complacently settled into a "Battlesesque" version of an indie rock band

You guys realize that Gloss Drop is just a shell of the genius of Mirrored? I.E nowhere near as complex or original and simply trying to emulate the propulsive vivacity that they once possessed.. probably why Tyondai left and went on to explore the far-out and challenging beauty of futuristic musical landscapes such as this:

It doesn't matter, but yet you wonder why people don't realise it's superior? Righto.

When will people realise that Gloss Drop is the superior album? They're both fantastic so it doesn't really matter but still.
