New York City (1989 – 1998, 2004 – present)

Helmet are an band formed in New York City in 1989 by founding members Page Hamilton (guitar/vocals), Henry Bogdan (bass), Peter Mengede (guitar) and John Stanier (drums). They are known for their frequent use of tuning and experimental approach to music, earning the band the nickname “the thinking man’s metal”.

The group signed to Ampthetamine Reptile Records, and released their first full-length album, Strap It On, in 1990. Interscope Records soon came calling and signed the band in 1992.

The band found mainstream success with their Interscope debut Meantime which debuted at number 68 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the hits “Unsung” and “In the Meantime”. After releasing two more albums, Helmet broke up in 1998.

Leader Page Hamilton later put together a new lineup in 2004, with Aftertaste-era guitarist Chris Traynor, Anthrax bassist Frank Bello and drummer John Tempesta. The band released their first post-reunion album, Size Matters, later that year and it was their last release on their longtime label Interscope Records.

Following more lineup changes, they licensed the following album Monochrome to Warcon Records in 2006, the rights to which have since reverted back to Helmet. On September 7th, 2010, the band self-released a new album Seeing Eye Dog via a marketing and distribution deal with Work Song. The album is also available in exclusive formats and multiple options direct from the band’s website

I don't think John Stanier will ever be replaced by anyone similar, but Kyle Stevenson is a beast, totally not to be overlooked!![2]

... no telling how good these guys were (are), their debut releases are more than influential & remain my personal favorites... Otherwise ; there is a Limited Edition of a recorded live called "Bad Moon" (March 1991) , (1000 copies were made so it's a bit "unknown') , i don't see it here among their releases & i thought i'll mention it regarding how "ecstatic" it is,.. it's a real rocking sh*t, anyone who love these guys should try it ... & will love it.. need help about it, let me know via pm. maybe i can help. // Thank You Helmet.

Everything up until and including Aftertaste was fucking amazing, although I have to admit I wish they had stayed disbanded. The albums after Aftertaste have been pretty shit, and almost work to ruin the groups early output.

comparison with Pantera is not completely out of place. They come from very different scenes but they do have a few things in common sonically speaking, so if you're into one you might easily be into the other. But I don't see how you could say that one is better than the other.
