Ayreon is a project started by Dutch composer and musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen in 1995. Based in Hilversum, Netherlands, Ayreon’s musical style derives mostly from and , but combines them with genres like , and . The majority of Ayreon’s albums are dubbed a “” with an ongoing science fiction storyline featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist.

Ayreon’s music is characterized by the use of traditional instruments in music (guitars, bass guitar, drums, analogue synthesizers, electric organs) mixed with instruments more native to and music (e.g. mandolins, violins, violas, celli, flutes, sitars and didgeridoo). TToE > Human Equation, even though I love both albums. Great to know that Arjen is still in form!

what I like of Lucassen (specifically in Ayreon) is his ability of sounding fresh in every work he puts out, it is really impressive.

Personally "01011001" and "The Universal Migrator part 1" are my favorite albums... don't really feel the connection to "The Human Equation" and "The Theory of Everything", though it's still levels above most music nowadays.

In fact, I'd say some of Arjen's best melodies are on TTOE.

The Theory of Everything isn't as bombastic as his other albums, both in story and songwriting. It's written with a bit more Intermission like passages. Also it's a bit underwhelming with the number of singers. There are some damn great melodies and harmonies though. It's definitely far from unforgettable though.

Heather "Love" Findlay: "Close your eyes, listen to your heart beat / Surrender to its soothing pulse / Silence the cries, gentle and carefree / Good or bad, true or false / You're not alone / You'll find me here whenever they oppose you / I am the strongest of them all / No need to fear these feelings that enclose you / I'm here to catch you when you fall / You're not alone / I am here dancing to your tune" Dammit, I always seem to get something in my eyes during this. :/
