Biography

Hilversum, Netherlands (1995 – present)

Ayreon is a project started by Dutch composer and musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen in 1995. Based in Hilversum, Netherlands, Ayreon’s musical style derives mostly from and , but combines them with genres like , and . The majority of Ayreon’s albums are dubbed a “” with an ongoing science fiction storyline featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist.

Ayreon’s music is characterized by the use of traditional instruments in music (guitars, bass guitar, drums, analogue synthesizers, electric organs) mixed with instruments more native to and music (e.g. mandolins, violins, violas, celli, flutes, sitars and didgeridoo). Lucassen writes the music and the lyrics, sings and plays instruments on all of the Ayreon albums, alongside many guest musicians. His most regular collaborator is drummer Ed Warby.

    I gave 01011001 a second listen through after a long time and really enjoyed it. Ayreon can be a bit difficult to get into due to the excessive length of albums, but it's definitely worth it.

    I can't believe how I once didn't care about Actual Fantasy much. I wasn't even interested in finding out whether it's any good! But right now it's like my favorite Ayreon album, or pretty darn close at least! Hard to say though because they're all some of the best albums I've ever heard. Every single one of them. No other musicians have achieved this for me. :)
