Jamaica Inn (4:01)

Cover of The Beekeeper

Tori Amos: “There’s a song Jamaica Inn that I wrote as I was driving along the cliffs in Cornwall on a ‘beautiful’ English day. And all of a sudden the gales started to come in. My mind started to wander and I pulled over on a cliff. I started to think about the story that I’d been told by some of the locals. When a ship would run a ground the wreckers would come in and take everything. I started to think about this story that was taking over my car in that moment. Jamaica Inn walked into my Saab and she said, ‘You might not like my story because I’m not gonna tell you how it ends yet. You need to travel it with me and we’re going to have to explore your deepest fears.’ What always stops me is betrayal. And what scares me is if I betray someone.”

One of her most underrated songs. Gorgeous. The Beekeeper is also underrated, and a beautiful album.

It's so gorgeous, but underneath the beauty is so much tragedy. Like a lot of the album.

I've always liked the 'sexiest thing' line.

Pretty laboured live version of one of the better songs from 'The Beekeeper'. There are better renditions out there.

I agree with ambigo. I remember sitting at the concert I'd been so anticipating and feeling a little dismayed that she was playing Jamaica Inn instead of something else. It turned out to be spectacularly clear, beautiful, and honest. Check out the version from Boston '09 bootleg if you can.

I agree with everyone about "the sexiest thing is trust." Not a truer word has ever been said.

Whatever. The LP version is just fine, beautiful song, and the "the sexiest thing is trust" line is beyond profound.

I used to laugh at the "sexy trust" line but now it hits me.... I appreciate the "betrayal hidden under lace and teacups" theme in the album and this song is a great example.... probably the biggest grower since 05.
