New York, United States (2001 – present)

Regina Spektor (born Regina Ilyinichna Spektor on 18 February 1980 in Moscow) is a Russian-born American singer-songwriter and pianist. Her music is associated with the anti-folk scene centered on New York City’s East Village.

Spektor studied classical piano from the age of six, practising on a Petrof piano given to her mother by her grandfather. She was also exposed to the music of rock and roll bands such as The Beatles, Queen, and The Moody Blues by her father, who obtained such recordings in Eastern Europe and traded cassettes with friends in the Soviet Union. The family left the Soviet Union in 1989, when Regina was nine, during the period of Perestroika when Jewish citizens were permitted to emigrate. The seriousness of her piano studies led her parents to consider not leaving Russia, but they finally decided to emigrate, for religious and political reasons.

Travelling first to Austria and then Italy, the family settled in the Bronx, New York, United States where Spektor graduated from a middle school yeshiva. She then attended the Frisch Yeshiva High School in Paramus, New Jersey on a scholarship for two years, but, feeling out of place, eventually transferred to a secular public school, Fair Lawn High School, in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, where she finished the last two years of her high school career
In New York, Spektor gained a firm grounding in classical music from her piano teacher, Sonia Vargas, a professor at the Manhattan School of Music.

@Seperat0r You don't like her anymore because you found out that she's Pro Freedom Of Speech? That's the dumbest fucking thing Ive ever heard

As much as I consider her political views dumb as f, it didn't really change my opinion of her music. I idolized her as well, now I don't anymore, but that's the thing, she's human, she can have (imo) dumb opinions and I can disagree with her on things, and still enjoy her music ;) The music is too good and too moving to just be dismissed now. Besides, it's not like she makes political songs and albums all the time. (And Laughing With is a clever song and I don't mind it one bit.)

I know it's Regina's music and talent that I love, not her personality or her views - even then, I have no right to judge her. But I grew up listening to her on repeat and idolizing her and crushing on her and whatever other ways I put her on a pedestal in my early teens. To see that she's a hypocrite and clueless about issues that she frequently offers her two cents on - through music or otherwise - is pretty painful. Maybe it's kinda petty of me to say this, but it's hard to listen to music from a person who acts the way she does. And no, she's not a demon and I'm in no position to comment on her character aside from this, but she comes across as so goddamn ignorant and self-righteous. In retrospect, her lyrics are dripping with that superiority, Laughing With from Far is a good example. I don't know, it might just be my personal shit here, but it's not an enjoyable listen for me any more... I think I finally outgrew her. It feels strange. TL;DR Boohoo, my fave is too problematic.

I loved her so fucking much, but I just don't see myself getting past what a scumbag she is. I checked out her twitter and seen a #jesuischarlie, so yeah, she's fucking trash.

I love how flexible her voice is. It's like she's acting with audio.

She's been my favorite female artist from the first time I heard "Hope To Begin", back when I was just a dumb and hopeless teen! Whenever I hear one of her songs I always feel better, they have a strange and magical effect on me :) Her concert in Caesarea, Israel was amazing, I'll never forget it!! Thank you Regina!

I dunno, sure her view on that is stupid and all (imo), but that doesn't diminish the effect her music has on me, or her talent or kind heart (which she *does* have despite this mess). so I'm gonna keep on listening to her and (im)patiently wait for her next album!

"And if anyone thinks that speaking out against Israel is anything other than thinly veiled antisemitism, they are deeply mistaken." lol. (from 2009, though, perhaps she's come to her senses since, who knows?)
